Whatever happened to the thornaby ,cleveland open,
I remember the tournament was always a highlite of the season ,played first weekend of the year.
The north had a fantastic tournament with a massive entry where if you played well in the prelim you could come up against world class stars,I have played chenxinhua, eric boggon, paul day a few good japanese players.
Also world stars were on view with a great world entry, players I have seen there include, apple, lindh, persson, all top canadians, all japanese including ono world champ 79. all top chinese, eloi klampar, des,was a fantastic venue always well supported.
Nothing like that now unfortunately...:fcb:

It does sem strange that events like this have all but gone, especially when you see an event like the Dunlop Masters being so popular. I know this was more of an exhibition but it was a great spectacle and was sold out.
I would travel just to watch!!!:popcorn:

Aye,Aye,Harry I remember some of it well.We used to go every year from mid 70's through to early 90's.
For many a year we booked into the Golden Eagle next to the Pavilion and spent a lot of time in the Bowling Bar.
Benny,Dave Armstrong,Rob Dodds and a few others from our way.Lindsey Taylor,Kevin Green, the Twins,Mark Simon and Jevon Chan from Cleveland,ah many an hour was spent discussing TT and putting the world to rights.
All the players you mentioned we'd see in the cafe and received reports on their performances in the bar.
We also had a few exploits in the Hotel itself, but they are confirmed to the 30 year archives.
Was a brilliant Tournament I must say;perhaps even the best in the country at the time.:rocker::rocker::yahoo:

Hey Harry i think it was taken out of the Calendar due to numbers, which is pretty much like some of the other tournaments within the UK. The Cleveland Open was a top event as i can remember ........ Jose will probably be able to get us sorted on this as she will probably be back on site.
Hey Happy New Year mate

what a great tournament,I got to the doubles final the year that England banned speed glue. Me and Darren Howarth on the way beat Brad Billington and Chris Oldfield, Peter Jackson (NZ No.1) and his partner, Hilton Meenely (Irish player playing in germany) and his partner, before we had the bad draw of playing Des and Nicky Mason, ah well it was a good run.

Sorry for the delay in responding... I'm in Atlanta visiting my family right now.
Alan will give the exact year when he gets back from the Medway event, but the Cleveland Open was lost when the Cleveland County authority broke into the four districts of Middlesbrough, Stockton, Hartlepool and Redcar and Cleveland. The event used to be sponsored by Cleveland County Council through their events department. Stockton took over the Junior 4 star - which is also a great event for juniors - but we lost funding for the Cleveland Open which was a shame because it was a good event.
A special event to watch for will be the Commonwealth Championships in Glasgow in 2009.
Best wishes to all!
