The ninth round of matches saw DHS London Progress I take another step closer to retaining their title. Indeed they may well find this report to be the most interesting of the weekend !. Whilst they were returning home secure in the knowledge they had gained a highly impressive maximum return of eight points their closest rivals Drumchapel Glasgow were being overturned 5-3 by an inspired BATTS Team Peniel I.
With Drumchapel Glasgow I leading 3-1 BATTS there was little hint of the drama to follow, but BATTS were far from finished. The very stylish Wang Zheng (who had earlier lost rather dispiritedly 0-3 to Stephen Jenkins) led the comeback with a superb 6-11, 11-8, 11-7, 9-11, 11-8 victory over Ryan Jenkins and the ever reliable Shu Ying Xu levelled the scores by beating Stephen Jenkins 11-8, 11-9, 8-11, 14-12. The pendulum had swung in favour of the Essex Club and despite his best efforts Craig Howieson was always having to play “catch-up” against Craig Bryant. Craig Bryant duly gave BATTS the lead 11-7, 11-7, 9-11, 12-10. John Holland, an earlier loser against Craig Howieson after an epic five ender made no mistake in seeing off Terry McLernon 11-9, 11-3, 11-7. Game, set and match 5-3 to the Essex Club and a result that enables them to leap-frog over Drumchapel Glasgow into second place.
Sycamore remain in one of the three relegation places but they will be pleased with the point they picked up against Ellenborough. Kevin Dolder and Chris Brown were the Sycamore heroes and they both picked up doubles. Kevin excelled by beating both Jon Nilsson (3-2) and Lorestas Trumpauskas (3-0) whilst Chris played equally well, downing Trumpauskas (3-0) and Jimmy Walsh (3-1). Ellenborough will be greatly indebted to the form of their new signing, and Liam Pitchford held them together by getting the better of Adam Frost (3-1) and in a tense deciding match Liam finally saw off Jason Ramage 11-6, 9-11, 8-11, 11-3, 11-8.
Oxford Fire Place Centre I were 5-3 losers to bottom side Urban Progress I, what was also Urban’s first points of the season. Oxford led 3-2, but it was Urban Progress who produced the stronger finish. Chris Lewis was a comfortable 3-0 winner against Tim O’Mahoney, Ashley Stokes beat Essex team-mate Vytas Rybakas (3-1) and Egle Adomelyte drove what may be “the final nail in the Oxford Coffin” when she beat Danny Ives 3-0. Jing Wei Zhao was by far the best Oxford players, and he won twice, beating both Chris Lewis (3-2) and Costas Papantoniou (again 3-2).
TTK Greenhouse, the Division’s draw specialists, produced their fifth draw of the season as they finished level with Ormesby I. The Gareth Herbert/Andrew Rushton strike force (just one defeat between them) was again undefeated although Andrew (who remains on 100 % after nine rounds of matches) came under real pressure from Michael Marsden. Michael raced into a 2-0 lead before Andrew fought his way back to triumph 9-11, 9-11, 11-8, 11-7, 11-9. Rushton showed just what a force he can be in his second singles as he beat David Meads 13-11, 11-4, 11-5.
There are no awards for players of the weekend, although the following would surely all be in contention for honours – Shu Ying Xu, Andrew Rushton, Stephen Jenkins, Liam Pitchford and Jiang Xhi Tao. All in all it was another excellent weekend’s Table Tennis.
