Table Tennis Talk IS about the sport but we are all ordinary people at the end of the day. As well as topical conversation we have other things which we may wish to talk about?

This leads me to this thread, I was recently invited to an Engagement/Birthday party. Far too much indulgence took place and I have to confess I head banged to Marilyn Manson's Tainted Love! :rocker:

O the shame and embarrassment of a 46 year old! :resent:

On a positive note I am determined to become a more responsible person and never to 'over indulge' again.

So on a lighter note fess up and make a fresh start!

Oh No!! Don't do it!! Grown ups are so b****y boring:charlston:

So Chris are you brave enough to admit what you have been up to lately?

Brave enough? No! Stupid enough? Definately!

Unfortunately I've been boring (and bored) for quite some time due to my eye and other injury problems but as I seem to be well on the mend now I'm sure to be back soon making a complete arse of myself.

One thing that my daughter constantly reminds me about even though it was nearly 20 years ago is when I set myself on fire while trying to get a reluctant barbecue to light. No real damage done apart from some fetchingly scorched hair up both legs, but it scared her to death!!:tomato:

annie how could you, anyway here's mine.

about 20 years ago my best mate & i went to see INXS(aussie rock band )for anyone who does'nt know at the nec(bham).

as we where walking to the venue we where constantly approached by ticket touts trying to sell us tickets for the gig.

so when we where approached again i told the man,we did'nt need tickets he asked why so i told him i had the best seat in the house, because i was the drummer for inxs.

i he then asked me for my autograph and i obliged by signing it for him and off he went as happy as larry.

we got inside watched the gig and had a fab evening (and that my lord is the whole truth and nothing but).

perhaps 20 yrs ago i looked like an aussie rocker (not)

About 10 years ago I was at my French clubs Annual Open tournament and talking to a group of our Junior girls as they wanted to practise their English for upcoming exams.
I'd just come off the table & was hot & sweaty. so naturally said "Je suis chaud" - strictly translating as "I'm hot". No problem you might think? Think again!

They fell about laughing, crying etc. I was absolutely dumbfounded but they wouldn't/couldn't tell me what I had said. They then went around the hall telling all & sundry what I'd said to much hilarity & giggling. Very confusing & embarrasing to be the centre of such attention.

Eventually someone took pity on me and explained that I should have said "J'ai chaud" which translates as "I have heat" and that "Je suis" had a very different & sexual meaning!!

For a long time afterwards my team mates had a great deal of enjoyment in asking me if I was feeling hot today!!!!

I can't recall IF... I was happy that day.... never mind how much... but... gleaning what I can here... I guess I must have been.

As to the balance of the discussion.... the ole Boneman has had a theorey for quite some time now... that there is a certain amount of alcohol one is allotted to consume in their lifetime. If they over-consume that allotted amount it can lead to very dire and grave circumstance. Me? Oh... that's easy... I consumed my allotted amount between 1976 and 1985!

Of course that does not make me immune to silliness or bouts of vacuousness.... but.... and somewhat unfortunately.... I can't just say... well... "I was besotted"..... so I have to own up, I'm afraid...

Annie, only just spotted this miniscule bit at the bottom - are you trying to test my newly repaired eyesight?

Not sure how to respond to this, but will err on the side of treating it as a backhanded compliment. Wilko, can I nick your trumpet?:trumpet:

It's j'ai chaud. Cause j'ai chaude means nothing in good french but never say that in my area... When a man say that here it has a sexual meaning too... It means that he met a girl who really wanted to have sex affair with all the men!!!! In reality it's an oral contraction for "j'ai eu une chaude (fille)" = i had a hot girl...

Salut Lucie ca va?

This was a typing error (honestly!) and the extra "e" crept in by mistake.

Thanks for explaining that and I will bear it in mind for the future, but is the pronunciation any different? If it's not, then it's difficult to say the correct thing isn't it?.

Hello,

I'm fine thank you, and you?

Yes the pronounciation is different: chaud= /ʃo/ , chaude=/ʃod/ ...

But i'm sure that if you say the wrong word one day, you'll be forgiven... We always forgive people who try to speak another language! :charlston::charlston:

This is something that we should all consider. I work for a company that exports to at least 30 different Countries around the world and when we have correspondence in English, if anyone makes comment, I always highlight the fact at how accomplished they are at communicating with us in our own language.

Lucie and Francis are to name a few whom make a tremendous effort in communicating in a language that the majority of us can understand.

Thank you to all our foreign members that make this effort! http://www.tabletennistalk.co.uk/forum/images/icons/clap.gif

Meanwhile, I'm thinking that y'all just can't spell "Shai Halud"... the Fremen Sandworm Gods in Frank Herbert's "DUNE".

I guess... I was not quite correct.
