HISTORY “ I am sure that our Swaythling Club is a unique organisation in the world of sport. I hope that it will continue to develop and promote that which money cannot buy, friendship, health, love, faithfulness, loyalty and tolerance.” Zarko Dolinar
Acting President 1972
These word were spoken by Dr. Zarko Dolinar, previous President of the S.C.I. and one of the driving forces – together with H. Urchetti and Mr. Wassmer whose idea it was to initiate the this unique club. Their idea was discussed in detail and on the 20th April 1967 during a reunion of former players and the Swaythling Club was founded. Founder Members: The original Committee was composed of the following players: President:Victor Barna,(England) Vice President:Ichiro Ogimura(Japan)Secretary:Zarko Dolinar(Yugoslavia)Treasurer:Hugo Urchetti(Switzerland)Press Officer:Bengt Grive(Sweden)Members:Ivan Andreadis(C.S.S.R) Dr. Dieter Mauritz(F.R.G) Other Founder members included the late Ron Crayden, Johnny Leach, and Michael Thornhill.
The basic initial idea was to provide support to former famous players. England is still very much involved in the International club in that Diane Scholer (Rowe) is the President, Johnny Leach MBE the Deputy President and Gloria Wagener ( one of the Sayer twins) is the Secretary. The SCI is now also responsible for the World Veterans Championships, but originally the aims were "to make it possible for older players, many of whom may be in bad health or without the means, to come together in the atmosphere of present world championships and meet once again those with whom they battled many years ago." Stan Proffit used to help a lot in this respect and he left a legacy to assist youngsters less fortunate in table tennis.
Currently England has 24 members, still including Diane's twin, Ros, Johnny Leach and Michael Thornhill, Ken Hyde, Ken Stanley, Aubrey Simons and many younger members. For the last few years I have been the England secretary, having taken over from Jill Parker, (I am a member of the Canadian section of the SCI ) and we try to hold get together's for members at national events and present the Fair Play award.
Actually, I think this item should have its own thread because there is so much that might be of interest to members.
Excellent idea because history shapes the future!
