Gavin Rumgay (Scotland) took another huge step forward in his quest to retain his Butterfly Open Grand Prix series 2006 title.
Whilst fireworks could be heard outside the Sports Complex of the Bristol UWE University venue, Rumgay was lighting up the campus arena with a dazzling performance, to take the mens open title, from a spirited and determined finals opponent, Mike Marsden of Durham.
Marsden had earlier dispatched second favourite, Jing Wei Zhao
with a sparkling display in the semi final stage, whilst in the other semi, Rumgay had to pull out all the stops to dampen the explosive challenge from England junior international, Damien Nicholls.
The women’s singles event was dominated by the two Chinese resident Peniel Accademy players, Katie Shuying and Maria Meihan.
Katie fought her way to the final, by outplaying top seed Naomi Owen in the penultimate stage, whilst her best friend Maria, was chopping her way through to the final against second seeded Egley Adomelyte, at the same time.
Katie Shuying with her ultra consistent attacking play, proved too strong for the defensive Maria Meihan and took the women’s title in straight sets.

The Highlight of the Saturdays banded events was the superb performances from junior international Chris Doran (Northampton), and Naomi Wilson from Wales.
Doran had come through the rounds in Men’s band one, with titanic victories all going the full distance, against Damien Nicholls David Mcbeath (qtr final) and then another epic 5 set thriller against Garth Kinlocke in the semi final, to set up a final confrontation with top seeded Mike Marsden. Chris somehow found the energy to take the band one title in straight sets from Marsden, with another brilliant display of top class table tennis.
A similar pattern was emerging in the ladies band one event.
Naomi Wilson had tough matches on her way to the title, with excellent 5 set wins against Rachel Jamieson, Sally Smith and Hannah Hicks, to then overpower Corrina Whitaker in the final.

It was particularly pleasing to offer a warm welcome to a party of 5 players with their coach who had made the long journey from snow laden Stockholm in Sweden, to participate in the tournament. The two day event was staged at the recently opened Sports Complex at the Bristol UWE University Campus, which was unanimously agreed by all I spoke to, to be an excellent venue with, great lighting and playing conditions. We look forward to returning to Bristol University.

This was great to watch and respect to the players for allowing themselves to be filmed.

Reminded me of the last time I went to watch a tournament! Great stuff! :static:
