Table Tennis Fitness...............is it iportant at every level ?

There are so many areas of this its nearly impossible to add it in one thread ! ..........

Beginners need to be as fit if not fitter in my opinion to even start and carry the basics onwards, with success and improvement only moving forward if they are willing to put the time and effort into the whole package. As a beginner your technique and stroke play are only just developing which means your fitness is only relevant to your movement towards the ball, that said total fitness for the young and the beginner should be a must.

The worst area we see or i see is the intermediate or higher level players who have been playing for a long period of time with the fitness being allowed to drop off dramatically, this is probably an area in the UK table Tennis players and many other sports we fall down in relation to our neighbours such as the French, German and other main powers in the sport.

The fitness of local league players is probably nothing short of average if not lower ...............why is we allow ourselves to let this slip ?

Is it "comfort" ie players find their own happy level and will just go through the motions not challenged so therefore it matters less. Or is it just sheer laziness on behalf of the general players ?

I would opt for both options as most are comfortable aswell as lazy and will generally "get by" with the way they are at the time whilst still gaining results.

How many players admit to running out of steam when its close or even losing the match for a fitness reason ?

I have seen so many players in our Western leagues who have absolutely let themselves go in terms of fitness, which could be said of the massive part of the nation when talking about fitness. The Government needs to get a grip firstly with school fitness education.

The other side of the story is fine when elderly players are returning to the sport and many older people realising Table Tennis can be a wonderful way to sustain or even gain a fitter not fatter body.

:dance3:Hi

Very interesting, I have been going to the Gym with my wife to encourage her as she's been reffered by our GP.

I have noticed that when I play I don't ache as much and i do feeel that it will help me in the longer run to play at the next level.

Yes, fitness is paramount and until we see it are we going be able to compete wtih the best ie the Chinese. The Chinese players are going to Gym in the same way Roger Federer does in tennis.

know what you mean, re fitness ,some times we only play so we can go for a pint after the game..normally local league! we only think of fitness when it is 9-9 in the fifth of a county or national league game, when we cant breathe and were thinking I should nt have had that fifth pint last night or pinched the last bit of bacon atbreakfast 1 hour ago...

TT is one of the few sports where you can play at a reasonable level without a great deal of fitness. I have based my game around getting things done quickly and with as little effort as possible to avoid getting tired. I'm sure my game would have evolved differently over the years if I had got off my backside and done a little exercise and increased my general level of fitness. I have lost a couple of stone over the last year or so and I can't say it has improved my game at all really. Maybe when I have lost a couple more I will notice a difference.
