View Full Version : You Lose Your Temper You Lose The Game

basically its this, when playing ping dont lose your temper,it is likely you will lose the game,if your getting wound up by nets ,your performance, or the fact you are behind in a game,NEVER lose your temper,i was told as a youngster to channel my aggresion into a positive energy that would increase your will to win and bring your performance into a controlled aggresion ,that would enhance your play by obviously channeling your energy into your overall mental and physical performance, instead of wasting your energy and thought on aggresive loud behavior, put it into playing better stronger shots, think more on how to outwitt your opponent with better serves, work out his weaknesses, dont waste your thoughts and energy whining about an edge or a poor shot, i found this difficult to impliment as a 15 year old but understood it,those of you who know of me will also know i still have had difficulty implimenting what i was taught all those years ago,it is very easy to lose your temper when you believe your playing well and the other guy gets a couple of nets or an edge ,or your playing against someone you cant quite workout how to play, and all you seem to do is pick up the ball of the floor after your opponent has hit his 7th lashed winner , REMEMBER A BASIC RULE, IF YOU LOSE YOUR TEMPER :taz:,YOU LOSE THE GAME. i have lost more games than i care to remeber by losing my temper, games i should have won ,if i had kept calm and played the game, instead of losing 5 from 10 i would have lost only 2 on average.this rule can be implimented in all aspects of life and not just table tennis, remember,YOU LOSE YOUR TEMPER,YOU LOSE THE GAME.
anyway enough of that, i need a pie:popcorn:
So in summary, are you saying 'if you lose your temper, you will lose the game'?

Does this mean if you smile all the way through a game you're gauranteed a win?

Well JKC its probably more reasonanble to say if you dont lose your temper or indeed control your emotions well you stand a better chance of winning..........semantics i realise but nevertheless true.

Ah....but !!!! I find that smiling my way through a match only works when you are winning easy.
If the game is close you need a certain amount of aggression and controlled Psyching up of yourself in order to succeed. Is this not loosing your temper in a controlled way ?

Aggression.........whats that ? im a calm fellow me
I always try to use in conjunction with controlled aggression the 3 c's cool calm and collected together with pauses for deep breathes.
Then a few moments later it all goes out the window.

I used to be a right little tare away when i lost. These days i get better results cause iv learned to control my anger.
constructive comments jkc,did you think about that all by yourself ?
I am well known for constructive comments, this one just sort of occurred to me after reading your opener.
I am often at the other end when people lose it as I have a natural ability to wind people up (both at the table and on forums). The odd little chunter here and there, a small moan about the conditions, an insinuation that they were a little fortunate or that you would have returned the ball on any other day is often enough to set them off.

:clapping:you must be so proud ,congratulations for such a huge achievement
I only do it to annoying people and I only lay the trap for people to fall into. If they choose to take the bait then it is up to them. You have to be a bit of a prat to not spot what is going on. It can be more enjoyable than the game at times.

Sorry Fantasy, I don't know what you are getting at. I am not interested in comparing brain power here, so keep your snide comments to yourself. I am just giving the other side of things and trying to explain why it is important not to lose your temper. It would appear you would be someone who might be tempted into a trap should we ever play. Win or lose I would not hold a grudge off the table, it is just another weapon to try during the game. If you don't agree with my methods I really don't care.

What a fine example we are having here of self control. Thank you all for your contributions!
I have during my career had the responsibility to 'Hire'n'Fire' people. So that I don't ever hit out in anger I make it a rule to sleep on it before I fire someone. This approach can be used with many major decisions.
What techniques do you have for controlling your temper?
I just concentrate on winning the next point and try to put everything else out of my head.

Temper is something we all, including my stupid self at times have to manage correctly and as we all get older and more dare i say sensible................the whole anger temper subject is a massive debate and everytime it is debated the opinions of every player are so different its usually impossible to have the same !
The bottom line is that most players will handle it (some better than others) in their own particular way, the only criteria being that the player or players do not become confrontational, which lets face it shouldnt only apply to sport.
The last thing i would say is this, we all should manage temper but we also need "characters" in whatever sport it happens to be as machine like clones would be maybe tediouis and boring............

agreed dave,i didnt think that saying "losing your temper is a bad thing" would cause so much negative comment from some players on the site,i thought that pointing the young, and others, away from this behavior which i have been guilty of, would be a positive step forward in some way ,i must be wrong,my apologies if i have offended anyone with this initial post. i feel i had to defend my initial post as it was being attacked so some form of defense was called for, i believe.

I do agree in most cases that you play worse when you lose your temper. I was just impressed with how many times you said the same thing in a post without ever sounding like you were rambling.

i repeated myself in the post deliberatly to drive it home to the young if they read the post, as sometimes they have a tendancy to forget things that are taught.

It's only a bit of fun really. I rarely get upset with people on Forums unless they are real idiots. I'm sure I have played Fantasy before and I don't think the match was memorable so he can't be one of those.
