View Full Version : Fred's 4th Vid
Believe it or not it is nearly 2 months since we made the last vid so here are a few short clips we put together yesterday.

Other than last week, we haven't found much time for practice but I think he is finally starting to come to terms with the extra weight of having a rubber on both sides and his backswing is starting to return.
Coaching tips please. Just wondered if anyone thinks he hits the ball a little too far infront of his body or is that just me?

Lets get that right arm balanced up, although quite difficult when the guy is only young and obviously small. The stroke is pretty good and i can see a marked improvement in his technique. Footwork is another major area to work on, with his stroke coming on so well.

It might be worth building an adjustable box to stand on (maybe 3 blocks) - the width of the table - wide enough to shuffle from side to side etc for his footwork as he develops. This will allow him to develop his stroke more accurately / comfortably and he will be at a natural height relevant to the table.
As he gets a bit taller take away the first level of blocks - so he still remains at the same height. He stroke play will develop naturally - he won't know the difference.
My Dad used the same principle with me for other sports, i.e., swimming - support via the armbands (to their most potential - fully blown or in Fred's case 3 levels of blocks) progressing through to little or no air (Fred's case - only one level of platform) - right through to nothing at all - I didn't notice the difference - neither will Fred.
Its only a thought - it might be useful, might not - in my case the armbands were for confidence (I never looked back) in Fred's case it's for comfort, natural and progressive development of his strokes in line with his own height and the height of the table.
Having said that I didn't have all of those things - but at the same time I didn't start playing on a proper table till I was about 8 or 9.
I've often wondered whether there was an argument for adjustable tables, i.e., in height - their legs, to enable children at a younger age to play comfortably and at their own height.
Anyway, hope this is helpful, useful - if not, there was no harm in trying and keep practising he's coming on a treat.

Thats a great idea the adjustable table etc, although the table feet are adjustable they are not nearly enough for smaller or very young to help there height.

Have looked at the video, amazing talent with so much potential. The adjustable Table Tennis legs is quite an interesting idea and maybe a deffinite winner.
Adjustable legs, I have heard that a few times but it sounds expensive.

The Chinese, as we all know are ahead in all development in Table Tennis (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Table_tennis).
We supply a table called the Flexi Table. It has adjustable legs to help small children develop the correct strokes. https://www.tees-sport.co.uk/homepage.asp?prodID=331

I would second Spongbob's suggestion of a box to stand on - reminds me of the wooden blocks my Grandad fixed on to my first bikes so I could reach the pedals!
With my coaching hat on, you need to get Fred to hit the ball at waist / chest height, as at the moment it's all at or above head height and this makes the free arm drop low so he can keep his balance.
Once you have him standing, with the table at waist height, you can then work on the other 3 basic strokes, fh & bh push, and bh drive.
I've seen mini tables for this purpose, I'll post a link if I can find them. I'm tempted also to buy a Tees Sport one for the smaller juniors at my club.

Surely the little guy will adapt as most do with the time frame invoved, he has great ability and yes the left arm is slightly less balanced but the improvement is moving well. Great video and keep the work going we may be seeing the new champion in the making.
I wouldnt worry to much in the height department as Fred is well equipped to adapt and become a better player with hard work.
I think part of the fun for Fred is the experience of attending the TT centre. I don't have the room or the cash to buy a new table either. I think that little by little he will adapt as he grows.
As for the vids I plan to make them and put them on every couple of months to chart his progress whils he continues to want to play. I expect more of an improvement on the next one now he is starting to get used to the weight of his new bat.
