Table Tennis seems to be a game whereby some players keep apologising even when a point is won in a perfectly normal way ie a smash etc...

Aknowledging good fortune is one thing being overpolite is another.

I would welcome your views.

This has long been something classed as the "norm" in Table Tennis with a player having to say sorry for what is a shot...........a shot that may have hit the net but a shot nevertheless! Not so in tennis or other net related sports where in actual fact players will use the fact they have hit the net as an advantage and one they even shout about !

The polite side however should not be lost but the fact that a player meybe didnt say sorry for a glance off the net shouldnt be deemed as someone who is nasty or deserves to be frowned upon.

Fair balance with a fair view point ...........keep smiling and be polite but dont be over sorry for good shots !

Hi Roger,

I'm probably guilty on both counts - whether its a net or a perfectly good shot, i.e., when its an outstanding point. Having said that I'm getting better - most of the time I just simply acknowledge the net now or accept the compliment when someone says 'great shot' or whatever.

In extreme cases in the past if I've had a number of nets / edges in one end I have actaully played a shot into the net (to lose the point on purpose!!!) - how light is that!!!

But...like I say I don't do this so often now - at the end of the day its swings and roundabouts - the nets / edges will balance themselves out. If I was aiming for them I'd be world champion!!!

Having said that re: swings and roundabouts my team mate Eddie Smith is extremely lucky and always seems to get a net or an edge at just the right time, i.e., in a very close game 7 all in the 5th or something like that.

Maybe this is luck - maybe its because he still goes for his shots (loaded with topspin) when it matters or when its tight.

In out league match the other night Eddie was playing Goddy (Harry) and right on cue (when the game could have went either way) Eddie popped up with a glorious net....and of course this was greeted with a right mouthful from Goddy and a laugh from Eddie!!!

So...back to the original point...agreed - and I will continue to try and not be too nice when I get a lucky net..!!!

Wise words as usual Dave.:rocker:

Not sure I agree with your tennis comment though. When I used to play (at the lowest level imaginable) it was always customary to apologise for a net as it is in tt. I've also noticed that the top players do it too when I've been watching tennis on the tellybox.

I agree that some players go over the top about it in tt, however, but I still always raise a hand and say sorry for a net or an edge. I find that it you get quite a few it tends to wind people up more than if you say nothing!:thtease:

Spongey is right, I played eddy at the north closed semi finals and got loads of nets and edges..(loads) They do even themselves out over a season I think v eddy he gets about 5 or 6 over a game, each time where I get all of mine in 1 match, normally semi or finals which works out better for me...about £80 in fact .:thumbsup:as I got loads on the vets final against him as well....sorry ed...:dance3:

Being a tennis player also there have been a number of time when I first started playing I would say sorry. Now days I just see it as I could have just as well lost the point too. I think the whole polite thing is to acknowledge that your skills are such that you should be clearing the net on every ball hit. If I net the net and it goes over to win me the point, I just say I was lucky. After all your opponent doesn't say sorry when you hit the net and he wins the point.
