View Full Version : Would you ever consider throwing a game

There have been various occasions when certain individuals have been tempted or have "thrown" or "lost" matches for less than ethical reasons, wether it be for teams or in a more likely scenario a tournament so the question is "would you consider throwing a match for whatever reason ?"

Never, ever, ever, ever, ever can I see a reason to do this but that's just me.

I have never thrown a game myself, but do know of people who have lost games in tournaments to avoid players in a certain half of the draw. This has been known to backfire. I do however have certain sympathies with this tactic.
The Chinese in the past were renowned for loosing friendship games as they became known. I'm not sure in this is still the case these days.

They should be banned where it is blatantly obvious!

i also have sympathy for dropping a game in a tournament, however it is something i have never done,i suppose it depends on the reward at the end, does everyone have thier price:money:

Well im with the majority, deffinitely wouldn't chuck a match not even for a good draw because let's face it you have to beat what is there anyway so why not do it correctly and gain credibility in the process.

I've known this too - I can't see the point actually - you're only cheating yourself. You should win a tournament on merit - not because you avoided a particular player that you would struggle against or get beat off. Maybe that's why I have never won a singles tournament!

Chinese? - Yes I've known that too - sometimes that is to promote the sport or make for a better spectacle of a match. I've no problem with this when it is not a real competition - certainly if it leads to people taking up the sport.

like the majority in here i would never evr throw a game just to get an easy draw or even a better draw, there are people who have done it and we know who you are but sometime it backfires which i find highly ammusing!!!

even down to the world famous Chen Xinhua who was told by his coach in the final of the worlds playing jiang jilang (excuse the spelling) when he was 2-1 up that he had to loose as he was not world or chinese number one!! he ignored his coach and beat him 3-1 which is why he came to England (and that is from the horses mouth)

Same here with a resounding no to the answer and i would have no hesitation in telling the person concerned if he or she did it.

Nice to see that at least there is still some ethics in the world.

I would class not trying to win as the same as throwing a game. So from that point of view we have all done it.

I wonder if the person who's done it in the past is going to own up? :resent:

I've happily lost a game (best of 5) because I'm enjoying the match and want it to continue, well happy as long as I've gone on and won the match.

I've also not worried about losing in the final of a plate competition, because I felt the plate was (shock horror) beneath me :punish:and I should have been in the main cup final!

thanks dave i try to keep people informed, i also know that many years ago when the cleveland 5star tournaments were played that Chen did consider throwing his group as he was due to play golf with i think it was Peter Hoyles from Blaydon !!!!!! he later lost to englands finest Des Douglas.

Don Parker threatened to pull him out of the England team if he did!!!!

Just a bit more info for you all so those who have chucked games know that even world class players think of chuck games

Same here no way, the winning is way to important than the throwing of games and as soon as we go down that particular route Table Tennis will become like some other sports such as the well documented problems within match fixing in Cricket.

Mr Wilko concerning the 2 players u mentioned am I right in saying one didn't turn out 4 an england game because he was playing golf with hoyles and the other one was often penalised for foul serving mind if he played in my division he would have been in the majority

I have once. Played the wife in the semi final of a local leagues dsivisional singles. I had won it before she had not. The match could have gone either way, but i played to her strong points rather than her weak ones to make sure i lost. She then went on to win it, and i got out of doing the washing up that night and extra helpings of dinner.
