Hi Dave,
Given that the site is establishing quite a big membership now I was just wondering whether it would be a good idea to conduct a survey re: the above.
The survey would establish who uses what and why - with a comments column for each category to enable the site member to state why they use that particular make / brand, i.e., what does it provide (or added value) that the other makes / brands don't.
Categories / Choices which you could consider including are:
- RUBBERS (Make): Butterfly, Stiga, Yasaka, Andro, Joola, Donic, Double Happiness, Tibhar, TSB, Hallmark, Dr. Neubauer, other
- RUBBERS (Type): i.e., Sriver etc - (this may need to free text)
- RUBBERS (Thickness): i.e., 1.5mm or 2.0mm etc (this may need to be free text)
- BLADES: Butterfly, Andro, Stiga, Joola, Donic, Tibhar, TSB, Hallmark, Dr. Neubauer, other
- GLUE (Make): Butterfly, Stiga, Donic, Tibhar, other
- GLUE (Type): i.e., Millenium etc (this may need to be free text)
- BALLS: Butterfly, Schildkrot, Stiga, Joola, Nittaku, TSB, other
- CLOTHING: Butterfly, Andro, Stiga, Donic, Adidas, other
- FOOTWEAR: Butterfly, Stiga, Donic, Adidas, other
You could use the 'Comments Box' to say how you came to make your decision / choice, i.e., rating provided in TT Catalogue, Advice from a Sales Rep, Advice from a Friend, Using a friends and liked it, or none of these (i.e., just like the look of it - its style / design or the noise it makes!).
If you run the survey it would be quite an indepth one because it will be significant enough to be reasonably representative of players across the country.
The survey is real (by that I mean - real users of the equipment etc) and in this respect you will get honest and constructive feedback about how good it really is (performance), whether it represents value for money (cost), whether the product lasts (longevity) etc.
What do you think? - potentially you could produce statistics, data graphs etc and a bit narrative (I could help with that if you want) summarising the key findings of the survey etc.
Just a thought - personally, I'd be particularly interested in the free text provided by the members in the Comments Box of each category, i.e., I use this particular blade because it suits my particular style of play without compromising control or speed etc - in addition to this I have previously tried ? or ? brand but found this particular brand suited me best by far.
Anyway..see what you think and whether it is possible / worthwhile etc.
Cheers Spongey!

Thanks for your replies Hovis and Steve - hopefully Dave will be able to pull together a proper survey, i.e., where you just select your choice against the options available etc - electronically. If he can't then its a manual excercise which we can still do but electronic is better.
I'll see what Dave has to say first and then we'll take it from there - but like I say thanks for your replies so far.
Hopefully, if the survey takes place electronic we can then analyse the data and then possibly have a thread about the findings / themes emerging and see whether this actually reflects general opinion of site members.
I think in addition to this there might be others issues that emerge, i.e., STIGA clothing - really trendy and stylish (I think) but the workmanship is quite poor, i.e., threads coming out / colour fading etc. I know for certain The Windmill has experienced the same problem as me. So, things like that might come out to.
Obviously, generally we will all be more interested in the equipment and how we all came to make our own choices etc and whether their performance have lived to its reputation.
Hope that all makes sense - and we'll see what Mr. Robson has to say about a possible electronic survey, i.e., similar to the previous one on dropping a game on purpose.
Thanks again maaaaaaties - Spongey!

thats correct i do use waldner rubbers and a donic blade, its the first time in 25 years ive changed my gear from butterfly, the point is if i was forced to make a choice, generally i would opt for the butterfly gear, the donic stuff is good but ive only tried one blade from them and one type of rubber so i cant speak for all thier stuff, ive tried a lot of butterflys rubbers and gear over the years and find thier stuff good quality over all.

Whats the Stiga China extreme like ? ...............hard sponge?

04-02-2008, 08:42 AM
Hi Dave,
I find Stiga China extreme to be a medium rubber softness and weight not as hard and heavy as many Chinese rubbers. Fractionally slower than Yasaka MKV but not much - that's why I use it on my forehand - to tame my loops a bit!!!It is very tacky especially the black.
Unfortunately I believe it is going to be discontinued but Bribar have stocks at discount prices!
Don't buy them all I'd like some more!

Hi,
This is my list :
Rubbers
- Koman Speed 2mm ( Very spinny and great for control looping with and very forgiving rubber )
- Friendship Cream with a separate 1.7mm soft sponge ( In the European market, you buy the rubber and the sponge separately to give you better choice - One day, the UK market will catch up. )
Blade
- Patsun Vantage Glass Fibre ( A name from the past ! I've tried loads of other and have always gone back to this one - great feel and control )
- Glue - Tihbar Individual
- Balls - TSP ( traditionalist ! )
- Clothing - Anything that fits, light and comfortable. Have never cared about "brands" & what others think !
- Shoes - Stiga ( the really light ones )
Extras - Spinmax

Blade - Michael Maze
Rubbers - Mendo Energy (2mil)
Glue - Stiga Energy (until end of season)
Balls - Nittaku or Stiga optimum
Clothing - Stiga
I quite like Butterfly equipment but sadly the major UK supplier has managed to mess me about an awful lot with orders. So I now use Bill and Lindsey Thornton who do a good job and are thoroughly nice to chat with about all things table tennis.

Hi - The Patsun make goes back to the 1980's and made blades and rubbers. The rubbers were rubbish but the blades were great. The touch and feel from these blades is exceptional. They went bust and a friend of mine visited the the old owner to get hold of some blanks for me - so i am lucky enough to have a hand made blade for me. Hey......i deserved it ! Te He
Re the system issue I had - all is well now.....Yippee !
Belisar - The Thornton mail order company are top draw as well as Bribar and TT Direct.
