Is Table Tennis in your area developing as it should be and are you as a player doing anything to help the problem, or are you completely happy with the way it is in your area / club.

Many areas in the UK and around the world are struggling to "recruit" new players in Table Tennis as are other sports but the bigger picture seems to be player retention, once the younger players get involved and practice heavily they seem to drift away once hard work is needed.....maybe this is just typical of the young wanting to be great players instantly.

I believe you are right on with that. Instant gratification is what most of the younger population looks for, and continuous praise is what they what to hear. As long as they are equal to their pears, motivation and hard work to become good at anything is something they don't understand.

in this area there is no development at all !!! i did try a few years ago when i took on coaching in schools and applied for a full time job coaching but was unsuccesful??

it takes alot to get kids interested in playing tt and alot to get coaches as people are not willing to pay the wage required for living these days ( i was offered 17g a year were as a tennis coach was getting 35g a year) no wonder our sport struggles !!!

Mr Wilko,

Remember the centre of excellence we ran for a while in Newcastle? What a farce that was!

The story is so typical of all areas North and South with money being the top problem. Invest in sport is the easy political message but getting the money filtered through to grass roots is near to impossible, i suppose we should never give up especially if the sport is one you like or love to play or coach in.

Keep it up is the only way forward it may prosper sooner than never with Olympic inclusion and UK hosting.

I was amazed on the 19th January, We had a disabled training camp in Sheffield at the EIS, but could not start until noon. I knew there was the Sheffield Junior league taking part and went to have a look, There was 20 tables each had a team match on with 3 kids per team. Not taking into account that teams may have squads of players. Hope they develop...

:thumbsup:Hi everyone,

Table tennis is developing in Bolton. There is now as wellas our centre in Horwich a new and vibrant table tennis clubd at withins school in Bolton. Ben dudley is a teacher at that school and he is also the founder of that club. there ae lots of youngsters playing they have two teams in the Bolton league and plan to have a third one next year. I went there to practise last Thursday. it was great. every year for 6 years so far i have organisaed a summer league starting in May. Quite a few very good youngsters have joined...

Yes we need more money... I believe it will come...

Lets not give half way. If we do we won't reach our destination.

It needs promotion such as the way you have Roger to create interest and then players join and develop, the whole process as you know is a difficult one with so many distractions for the young players from other sports. Bolton Table Tennis seems to be doing well and long may it be expanding.
