Werewolf, absolutely correct. The Russian authorities banned table tennis because they thought it was harmfull to the eyes.......I believe its now your turn to ask a question.

Because it was dangerous and could damge your eyesight.
I once got hit in the eye from a top edge from my doubles partner and it soon became black

Can you believe it Whiff-Whaff and Gossima ARE actually early names for Table Tennis. I think the one you couldn't find is Flim-Flam. If this is correct Mr Werewolf then I think TS should set the next question.

'Do you play TT (ping pong)? - 'oooh yes a little!' - 'who's probably the best / most natural player there has ever been?' - 'eeeeerm Ove Waldner (Sweden)' - 'eeeer...have you played him?' - 'yeah - beat him!!!' :laola:

Same team as Des! - waaaaahey that's brilliant - he was my absolute hero when I was younger - left hander, brilliant blocker, lightning reactions and excellent attack too. When I was younger he was the person (in the TT world) that I admired the most and wanted to play like etc. Did he mention me!!!!
I have spoken to him a couple of times ('hello' and 'bye'!!!). On one occasion during a British League match he was playing on a seperate table (Premier League) and our team were playing alongside - Malcolm Lusk was playing for us and snapped his achiles :resent:. Des came straight over and comforted him (I think he'd lost the first end!!! - only kidding) - which was very nice of him.
Cheers Spongey

Is that true !
The players and place names are correct, but it was apparently 1974 not 1971 (we may need to check the official records with the ETTA tomorrow) and yes, he was fully clothed. Apparently all the press were there and it was well reported in the national newspapers. Were you there Hovis Bread Eater? And were you at the National finals today ? Nice guess though Hovis.........I was thinking more of Outer Mongolia but held back to see what others thought! :resent:
Is this the longest outstanding question yet ? I can't believe you guys don't know about the CTTF where England have done really well in the team events. As well as Trevor Taylor, Matthew Syed won the Commonwealth title three times, and Des Douglas and Alan Cooke were also champions. Carole Knight Moore and Karen Witt also won titles - in addition to the question about the first women's champion.
Since this is Commonwealth information time, an added on question - when was table tennis first included in the Commonwealth Games?

Ok, the first Commonwealth Championship was held in Singapore in 1971.
Jill Shirley, now Parker, won the Women's singles and Trevor Taylor the Men's.
Table tennis was first included in the Commonwealth Games in Manchester in 2002.

I agree, it's even better when I win and it's maybe 1 out of every 10 and then I don't play this person for ages and I can brag about it on a forum until everyone gets bored of hearing about it (and then do it some more too).
