At the tender age of just 12 years young, England cadet International Emily Bates surely made history by taking the City of Derby 4 star Open Junior Girls title.
Following a weekend full of surprises in the FA cup, Emily was magnificent throughout the tournament, to shock all at the Moorways Leisure Centre on Sunday 9th March. Full of confidence from her recent unbelievable win at the Safirs (Stockholm) International under 13 tournament, Emily continued to play some incredible table tennis to defeat the likes of Mary Fuller, then top seed and England number 1, Emma Vickers at the semi-final stage. The staged final went to a close five setter, but Emily was not to be denied, as she once again capped a memorable day, taking the Junior Girls title by defeating England number 3, Rachel Jamieson.
Matt Ware confirmed his top seed placing by taking the Junior Boys title from Richard Marshall in the final. Marshall had earlier found a rich vein of form to reach the final, with great wins over Craig Howeison then, Chris Doran at the semi final stage. Ware on the other hand had to pull out all the stops to halt a spirited challenge from Richard Andrews in the qtrs. surviving match points down, in the fifth end. Ware outpointed Wing Yung Chan in the other semi to set up a final confrontation with fellow England Junior International, Marshall.
