i have compiled a list of the best 12 players I have played against or with in the Northumberland league
Mr Wilko has never dropped out of the top 3 for a decade and in a recent county match had meads on toast but just lost
Che van Que probably once world class?
Benny junior international, if every player had 6 pints before they played he would be world champion
Pat Tindale could loop with a hard bat, brilliant at 15 but unable to adapt to faster rubbers
Brian Burn if newcastle footballers put in the effort he did who knows ranked 6 in england late 60's ?
Eddie Smith Talent, temperament but know as the Tin man, had he moved down south would have achieved top 5 ranking
Peter Whiteman from 3rd division player to county top 5 in 6 month had he not had ill health would have gone far Beat Burn at DHSS after Brian had defeated Dennis
Brad Billington helped win wilmott cup highest ranking england 5? played for Gateshead a couple seasons
Goddy Swiss air and thorpeys coaching his finest hour
Colin Eltringham included because he was tremendous to watch
Phil Clark very good player and excellent coach
Maureen Heppell england top 5
I apologise to a few I have left out and though its a bit long winded hope other members could provide their local league choice:thumbsup: Rob star

Brad is coaching as far as i know and yes an exceptional player when i saw him last aswell. I heard he was working at something else also but not sure somebody must know very soon.
Strange how names come up that you remember................Kevin Beadsley was a great player also but not very well last time i saw but hopefully on the mend.

I can remember a few great trips to Hemsby in the late 80's with a crowd of players from the North East. The TT was good and I liked the doubles where partners were drawn out of a hat. It gave you the opportunity to be drawn with a good player and possibly do well. The night life was brilliant as well....although struggled to get out of bed for early matches some mornings.....in fact most mornings lol.

as my wife plays as well we used to have several trips to hemsby every year althoughi didny always win mine my wife and son did! always had a good time and caught up with a lot of old friends, mentioning old friends saw a national premiere league match at batts at harlow, essex a couple of months ago and had a chat with nigel eckersley who i hadnt seen for donkeys years some achievment to to still be playing at that level and still talking his opponents off the table!!!
DaveR
04-16-2008, 11:02 AM
Hey i see Eck a few times a year Bric and yep hes still good at talking his opponents off the table, with staggering results.......... especially when him and John Hylton get to play, having said that i think John has dropped out of circulation of late.

yes i notice john hilton's name missing from the vetts results and rankins could he be injured? i would pay to watch nigel play john!
DaveR
04-17-2008, 09:16 AM
John missed last year British league season because of injury but said he may return and always a great game playing him. Ive had some tussles with him the season before even though he took one match against me i won four after ! Top man loads of respect for him. What he did in the europeans was an amazing feat even though the conditions and rubber favoured him it was an incredible achievement and one i cant see being achieved again unless someone improves dramatically.
Robstar
04-17-2008, 04:09 PM
yeah agree hilton was a great player and good 2 watch but if you check the record books since 1992 dublin eck has the better results in the worlds/european vetts
the difference is eck is 100% and never says die

Time to defend myself again I think. Though I admit I was a bit fortunate against you Mr Wilko, especially in the second end when you pegged me back to 19 all, I only got a 7 start (only!!!). Also, against Eddie even if you took off my 7 start I was still up on points!

If you get your bid in quick, you could be the proud owner of this tomorrow. Think of the memories it would bring back.

In no particular order
STEPHEN COVERDALE. Had unreal talent and when his game was on he was really good to watch....could have gone far but lacked fighting spirit....unlike Barry Forster!
BARRY FORSTER. Such a shame things didn't pan out for him...if only Brian Thompson hadn't have been so stubborn and let him go when he got the england call up. He was a pure fighter and regular winner of cadet tournaments; most often beating Alex Perry in the finals.
ANDREW WILKINSON. Much the same kind of player as Forster with a hellish fighting spirit. A shame he has lost a bit of the interest to practice etc. i enjoy playing him....more so recently...we've had two really good games this season....shame i lost them both lol
DAVID GODBOLD. Doesn't have any particular shot you could say, like , Beware of his forehand etc but...strong at everything and text book perfect. Any beginners wanting to learn how to play the game should watch him.....and learn alot! He'd be much much faster if he took all those bandages and tube grips off!!! Also has shares in Deep Heat!
EDDIE SMITH. Hes just so good naturally, has unmatchable flare...but needs to be fitter.
MARK CHRISTIE. Just wish he still played now. I remember watching him when i was a cadet and thinking i wish my forehand was like his... a pure rocket!
STEVE PENMAN. If he had more bottle and didnt mess about, alot of people would fear him. However...his tendencies to be the Ronald MacDonald of table tennis nearly always get the better of him!
DAVE ROBSON. A really experienced player with a very strong backhand.
Need think so will edit this later..... terrah :rocker::Rock:

He's still going strong - he won the Derby League Closed tournament in 07 and got to the semis this year.
