Mixed Doubles...........
Rd1
With 8 byes in the first, round you would be mistaken to think that there wasn’t any room for upsets, well three pairings ousted higher ranked opponents.
(54) M Evans/(215) E Bates bt. (16) S Marples/(238) C Graham 11-9, 1-9, 7-11, 11-5
(26) C Lewis/(239) G Ashton bt. (87) T Surrey/(231) C Whyte 11-5, 11-5, 11-7

There were no major upsets in round 2 with the higher ranked pairings in each match going through, but with three games going to 5 sets the battles were intense.
Quarter Finals.......
Again it was domination by the top seeds, with Meads and Farquhar being the closest to cause an upset stretching out their games to 16-14, 15-13 and then 11-6.

Without a shadow of doubt this was game of the tournament (so far), it had everything and more. With one of the favourites, starting in ruthless fashion the result everyone expected looked inevitable; however, Ware had other ideas. Quickly two down, he revised his game plan and with devastating fashion pushed Rushton to his limits.
The increasing onlookers became torn between two magical displays, as on the other table Liam Pitchford was busy writing his own story, defeating Tim Yarnall in five. Once complete the focus switched firmly to Rushton and Ware and every eye in the hall became engrossed by the brilliant table tennis.
Ware surged in the third and fourth looking increasingly confident as he created a level playing field pulling the score back to 2-2. As you would expect the game tightened up in the fifth, but with nothing to lose Ware pressurised Rushton with some fantastic cross-court forehands nicking the game 12-10 and edging 3-2 ahead. There was also a great sportsmanship shown by Ware in this game as he acknowledged an oversight and reversed the umpires decision making sure Rushton was correctly attributed a point.
Game six went to the wire and if Ware could just hold his service, he would progress to the quarter-final. At deuce, three match points slipped away and the tension become unbearable. Finally, Ware converted 16-14 and the crowd erupted in appreciation of his superb efforts.
(24) Mathew Ware bt. (2) Andrew Rushton 0-11, 11-13, 11-5, 11-6, 12-10, 16-14

Hmm, Andrew (Baggaley) could find himself with a slightly easier route to the final than he expected. Could be a tough match against Danny Reed, but if he despatches him, he's got to beat either Ben Barlow or Matthew Ware.. I know Matthew had a cracking match in the previous round, but I still think Andrew would take him over Rushton.
Drinkhall still for the title, though.

The next day and yes lots of games to view but would there be any strange results. Here's how the players progressed to reach this afternoons finals. Here's how the players progressed to reach this afternoons finals.
Men’s Singles
Quarter Finals
There was potential for upsets in every match with Liam, Danny and Gavin playing well and Mat on a high from an amazing performance yesterday. The two matches that stretched out to 6 sets were thanks to yesterday’s top performers, Liam and Mat.
Darius was making Liam work for everything, forcing Liam to move all round the court to return his powerful shots, although Liam unleashing some powerful hits himself he was still only working a small area of the table. 4-2 to Darius.
The passion and determination was clear to everyone to see and hear as the vocal Mat Ware gave it his all against Ben Barlow. After winning the second, narrowly losing the third and winning the fourth, would Mat be able to continue his run of form? The answer however was no, Ben upped his game and took the fifth convincingly before wrapping it up in the sixth set.
(1) Paul Drinkhall bt (5) Gavin Evans 11-2, 9-11, 11-5, 13-11, 11-3
(3) Darius Knight bt. Liam Pitchford 11-9, 9-11, 11-8, 10-12, 11-6, 11-5
(4) Andrew Baggaley bt. (6) Daniel Reed 3-11, 11-6, 11-7, 11-9, 11-5
(19) Ben Barlow bt. (24) Mathew Ware 11-5, 9-11, 12-10, 9-11, 11-5, 11-8
Semi Finals
With so many titles between them, surely this game would surely produce the eventual.
Set 1 saw both players swapping points, neither looking dominant, eventually Paul took it 16-14.
Set 2 saw a good start from Darius going 5-0 up and then all of a sudden the score was 5-5, had he lost his composure? Back to swapping points, this time Darius takes it 12-10
Set 3 wasn’t as close, although you couldn’t discount Darius.
Set 4, at 10-6 up is looked like it was Darius’s set to dominate, Paul brought it back to 11-10 before taking the set 14-12 and the game.
(1) Paul Drinkhall bt. (3) Darius Knight 11-4, 16-14, 10-12, 11-4, 14-12
(4) Andrew Baggaley bt. (19) Ben Barlow 11-7, 11-4, 7-11, 11-6, 11-8
Women’s Singles
Quarter Finals
Top seeds Kelly Sibley and Joanna Parker both got through with convincing wins in four straight sets. Sarra Wang and Sarah Perks disposing of higher ranked opponents to secure their places in the semis.
(201) Kelly Sibley bt. (227) Mary Fuller 11-5, 11-7, 11-2, 11-4
(216) Sarah Perks bt. Joanna Roberts 11-4, 6-11, 11-7, 11-8, 11-5
(207) Sarra Wang bt. (203) Lindsey Reynolds 12-10, 6-11, 8-11, 13-11, 11-4, 11-3
(202) Joanna Parker bt. (206) Karen Shepherd 11-5, 11-2, 11-7, 11-2
Semi Finals
The form book remains intact, as Kelly and Joanna meet in the final after both getting another 4 set win.
(201) Kelly Sibley bt. (216) Sarah Perks 11-8, 11-5, 11-8, 11-8
(202) Joanna Parker bt. (207) Sarra Wang 11-6, 11-4, 11-7, 11-7
Men’s Doubles
Semi Finals
The semis were a quick affair with the favourites in each game winning in 3 straight sets.
(1) P Drinkhall/(3) D Knight bt. (19) B Barlow/(26) C Lewis 11-8, 11-6, 11-7
(2) A Rushton/(7) T Yarnall bt. (43) D Macbeath/(74) K Daybell 11-3, 11-3, 11-8

Women’s Doubles Final
The women’s doubles final saw the top four seeds of the tournament team up.
After a shock defeat in the first round of the singles by Sarah Perks (ranked 16th), Abigail was really pulling out the stops to try and redeem herself.
There were a few forced errors for Kelly and Jo, but the third and fourth ranked players rarely managed to capitalise on them. The speed and movement of the top seeds shone through and showed just why they have been performing so well on the international scene recently, winning the game in three straight sets.
(201) K Sibley/(202) J Parker bt. (203) L Reynolds/(204) A Embling 11-6, 11-8, 11-8
Men’s Doubles Final
Paul Drinkhall and Darius Knight v Tim Yarnall and Andrew Rushton
With both Rushton and Yarnall keen to avenge their early exits from the men’s singles the men’s doubles final looked to be a tight affair. Drinkhall and Knight had their work cut out from the beginning to retain their title. The game stared in frantic fashion as the number one seeds shot into a 3-0 lead, this continued onto an 11-7 first end. The next end was a carbon copy of the first as the current holders began to assert their authority over the opposition.
Following their timeout in the third, Rushton and Yarnall commenced a fight back. However, this was short lived and they eventually succumbed to a powerful display from their opponents.
(3) Darius Knight /(1) Paul Drinkhall bt. (7)Tim Yarnall/(2)Andrew Rushton 11-7, 11-7, 14-12

Men’s Finals...........
It was final worthy of viewing with 2002 winner Andrew Baggaley (Bucks) against the current champion Paul Drinkhall (Cleveland).
As with Pauls match against Darius, this promised to be a close and exciting game with both players being fast paced attackers at a similar level, but can Baggaley capitalise on his experience.
Baggaley who plays his game in Spain lost the first point, but it looked pretty even from then on, with Paul taking it 11-7.
12-10, the second set went to Baggaley, although Drinkhall came across as more composed, it was his consistency that has been such a strong point of his came appeared to wane towards the end of the set.
The third set saw them both prove that they weren’t just heavy hitters, although the play was predominantly getting further and further from the table, this was interspersed with some close tactical play. Baggaley takes the third in what is proving to be a close game.
Will the fact that Paul has competed for four titles and reaching the final for all them be his undoing, as this is Andrew Baggaley’s only event.
The beginning of the fourth set saw the ball hitting the white line more than any other part of the table.
Baggaley’s strength and relentless pressure secured him his third consecutive set.
After going 10-3 down it looked as though Paul’s day was done, Andrew Baggaley’s momentum was unstoppable, Paul tried a late comeback bringing it to 10-6 before hitting it long to give his title away.
(5) Andrew Baggaley bt (1) Paul Drinkhall 7-11, 12-10, 12-10, 11-4, 11-6

Women’s Finals..........
Kelly Sibley v Joanna Parker
Women’s final was a repeat of the U21’s and following her defeat Joanna Parker looked keen to reverse Fridays result.
Kelly Sibley, last year’s runner up, looked assured as she dominated the early stages with a confident and positive performance. However, Parkers elegant playing style brought her back in contention as she varied defence with an impressive forehand attack, something that has been lacking in recent years.
The crowd really appreciated this classic table tennis encounter as both players revelled in the atmosphere pushing each other to the very limits of their ability. With barely two points to separate them throughout the second game, Parker edged it 11-8, following a mistake by Sibley who smashed a high return into the bottom of the net.
Back level pegging the third end seemed to favour the number one seed as she dismantled Parkers defence 11-4. Sibley perhaps the mentally tougher of the two, was aided in the fourth by a fortunate clip of the net that killed the ball dead, and with this went Parkers focus, as Sibley moved into a 3-1 lead.
In the fifth, Sibley appeared to relax and bide her time waiting for the moment to attack. In a desperate attempt to halt her opponents progress, Parker called a timeout at 5-9. This just delayed the inevitable as Sibley went on to gain her first Senior National title and her third of the weekend.
(1) Kelly Sibley bt. Joanna Parker (2) 11-9, 8-11, 11-4, 11-2

Correction to the ETTA report - of course Andrew Baggaley does not come from Cleveland. It could have been considered an all Cleveland final if Danny Reed had defeated Andrew Baggaley, but he lost in one semi final to Baggaley as Paul Drinkhall was defeating Darius Knight in a close match in the other semi final. Andrew Baggaley is from Milton Keynes and, therefore, from Bucks.
Thanks for the note about Matthew Ware's sporting gesture above. He was awarded the Swaythling Club International Fair Play Award at the presentations in Sheffield and it must have been for that fair play gesture.

Mathew probably got the award for his gesture during his match against Bradley Evans. In this match Bradley hit a high ball winner just as another came into the court. The umpire called a let but Matt insisted that it was Bradley's point, folded his arms and refused to continue until the umpire gave Bradley the point.

I can't offer a definitive answer, but I believe it's very political. I think the ETTA don't like the fact that he never enters Grands Prix and equally the Baggaleys feel the ETTA have something against them, but it's not something that I know too much about.
He, of course, has played for England previously (notably in the Commonwealths). The same could be said for Alex Perry though.. at Commonwealths in Melbourne, he wasn't in the England team, despite being National Champion.

yes it is something to do with the above from MK Chris i also think it has something to do with his family? falling out between them and ETTA.
Just to put Hovis straight i have not got curly short hair or blonde highlights you must be loosing your marbles now that you are nearing that age of 40+ like Ed and Hovis they keep thinking they have been to the bar when really it was just the tiolet !!!!!!

Well done to Andrew Baggaley, great win proving all is possible with hard work and commitment.

i also think it has something to do with his family? falling out between them and ETTA.
Something like that, I'm not certain what though.

Can't we do like the Red Tops and say something controversial thus ensuring a clarification?

Because I don't know the situation.. in fact, I think the only people who do are the Baggaleys and the ETTA (which, incidentally, I find very amusing when a certain member of our league committee says Etta, as though it weren't an acronym, thus pronouncing our national governing body's name like the Spanish terror group.)

i think it stems back to a few years ago.......... im sure it is something to do with his brother coaching him but would not put my life on it!!!!!!!

As far as i know the players had to participate in a number of national events to be considered to be selected for England. Andrew did not fulfil this criteria.

I don't mean to tell the truth. That's why I mentioned the Red Tops. Make up something close based on the rumours.:secret2: That should get someone on here to explain what really happened.:whistling:

Oh right. Well, in that case, the ETTA are a corrupt bunch of mafia-backed conmen who put their the backing into people who have shorter hair than Andrew... and I'm rubbish at making things up.
I've been talking about this tonight (with someone who is neither pro, nor anti-Baggaley.. in fact he says neither party is totally blameless). H'apparently, you are correct in what you are saying. I believe the ETTA offered Stephen (his brother) some sort of grant or coaching job, but it wasn't enough to live on, so they couldn't accept.. basically, the Baggaleys' money comes from table tennis; Stephen's coaching and Andrew's playing.
Andrew playing abroad means that he doesn't have time to enter Grands Prix and such like, which the ETTA don't like at all. This means he doesn't get picked for things like the England team, etc, very often.
I think Andrew winning is basically a kick in the teeth for the establishment, who have put all their eggs in one basket with Paul and Darius; they've spent millions on them.

as above from MK Chris- it has been like that for years like i have said in other topics i wasnot picked when no1 junior for England and M James from yorkshire was not picked neither and he was no3 as we were both from the North and they were flying from heathrow and it would of cost them more money to get us there they picked all southerners, it will always be like that!! if you are in the right place or your face fits then champion you play even if not ranked in top 10

Same sort of thing happened to me Wilko as u probably know. Essomba was picked over me even tho he d played for camaroon and was ranked lower than me. I blame u Wilko for giving us northerners a bad name!

Darren Howarth from Mancheste was ranked No. 3 behind Alex Perry and Edward Hately all season and never got picked top play for England at the Europeans.
He was from Manchester and probably set the trend for the other Northerners not selected.

Incidentally, though, Andrew is from Milton Keynes and he hasn't often been picked when he arguably should have been.
Some situations are very political and shouldn't be.
