Cippenham Table Tennis Club came away with two more awards from the Slough Sports Awards, hosted by the Mayor of Slough on 31st March. David Hayes became only the second Cippenham member to be honoured as Senior Sportsperson of the Year (the first was Gareth Herbert), four years after being Junior Sportsman of the Year. The Club itself received the accolade of Junior Club of the Year for the fourth time, the eighth time that the club has received an award, the others being Senior Club of the Year once and Community Club of the Year three times.

David’s award, which like the others was for achievements in 2007, came after a year in which he had trained full-time in France and represented Ireland at the World Championships.

The Junior Club of the Year award arose from achievements on and off the table. Stephanie Mitchell, who with her brother Eddie, received the trophy on behalf of the Club, was the ETTA Young Volunteer of the Year and Jan Chapman won the Female Coach of the Year at the same ETTA annual presentations. On the table, Gavin and Bradley Evans, Melanie and Rachel Farquhar, plus Eddie Mitchell, all had notable successes in national or international events and the Cippenham girls’ team were runners-up in the Premier Division of the Junior British League.

Cippenham also received a number of other nominations:

Community Club of the Year: Cippenham Table Tennis Club

Sports Personality of the Year: Graham Trimming
Junior Sportsman of the Year: Eddie Mitchell
Junior Sportswoman of the Year: Rachel Farquhar
Most Promising Sportsperson: Rachel Farquhar
Senior Sportsperson of the Year: Martin Adams
Service to Sport: Jacquie Lovel
Sports Coach of the Year: Jan Chapman

Interspersed in the proceedings were demonstrations of sports and dance. Cippenham Table Tennis Club was pleased to accept an invitation to participate in this and Martin Adams, David Hayes, Eddie Mitchell and Malcolm Makarian put on a performance that thrilled the capacity audience. Eddie (aged 13) and Malcolm (70) playing together, showed that table tennis is truly a sport to be enjoyed by all ages, whilst Martin and David ably demonstrated the speed of the modern game.
