A lot of the older VETTS will probably have to look seriously into rubber change next season if the ITTF have the list of approved rubbers shortened which seems to be the case. Many use a variation of the long pimpled and grass relative rubbers to give the best advantage possible when age becomes a movement factor.

These abroad tournaments seem to be well supported from the UK area of the World with lots of Veterans taking part in all sorts of copetitions, great to see in my opinion.

Noticed a few lads in there !

Roy Norton obviously and Julien Gitts..................they must have some spare time !
The full list is quite interesting and shows the full interest with a massive entry level which also sadly shows the greatest growth in the sport is the silver hair brigade ............... better check my mirror!

Well here are the results of the Rio VETS tournament:

International world veterans championships in Rio, Brazil. There were some very interesting results in these championships played on May 30. The winner of the over 40s men's singles was Ding Yi of Austria who beat Carsten Egeholt of Denmark three games to 0 in the final.Colum Slevin of Ireland had a very good tournament winning a bronze and just losing three games to two in the semi final. In the over 50s event Cecava Miroslaw, Czech, beat the holder Yu Xiang of the USA in the final. A name most players of the 1970s will remember was the top international from Czech Milaw Orlowski who took a bronze medal in this event. Other winning results were over 60s Jaroslav Kunz, Germany, over 65s Wolfgang Schmidt, Germany, over 70s Dieter Lippelt, Germany. The many times former world champion Herbert Neubauer was beaten in the third round of the over 65s event showing how strong the veterans standard is today, Mr Neubauer has a very high USA rating of 2,333 after winning many events in the USA Open two years ago.In the over 75s a great win for England with Fred Lockwood taking the gold medal. The over 80s winner Cumir Ruzha, Czech.Last but not least in the over 85s, an excellent result for Spain with George Christian from my club taking a bronze medal in this event, George also took home a silver medal for the men's doubles. Well done George my club and Spain are very proud of you, I have decided to contact the mayor and ask him to give you the honour you deserve - the freedom of the town. In this event many times world champion Les Darcy from England took second place to Andre Joing of France. In the ladies the main event the over 40s singles went to Russia with a win for Inna Tikakina. There were some medals for England Betty Bird partnering Haraada Mitsue from Japan taking the silver medal in the over 70s ladies doubles, Margaret Dignum a bronze in the over 65s singles, and Nelie Penney with Dorothy De Low of Australia a bronze in the ladies over 80s doublesSome other interesting results were Yu Xiang, USA and Zoran Kalinic, Serbia taking gold in the over 50s men's doubles.Over 65s doubles went to Herbert Neubauer, Switzerland and Wolfgang Schmidt, Germany. The over 85s men's doubles went to Les Darcy, England and Herbert Levinge, Ireland. Also at these championships were the former German international and world singles runner up Ebby Schoeler and his English wife Diane who was a former English champion and world doubles title holder plus many other great players from the past.
