View Full Version : Dusty Rubbers

Some the threads on this forum cover rubber life. One topic I haven't seen is rubber deterioration during a match.
Being a loopy type player I prefer hard rubbers but not tacky ones, so I can graze a ball rather than hit through it. Things are fine until the 4th game of 5, when the rubber stops gripping the ball as much (probably only 60% of normal):resent:.
I get round the problem by wiping the rubbers with a wet cloth between games - you can actually see the dust on the bat before I wipe it!
However, I don't see other players in the local league doing the same. Does anyone else on here suffer the same?

Most of the local halls and places like that tend to be dusty Moggy and yes i have the same problem like most players but they probably do it as i do in between points. More of a problem i find is places that have little or no air flowing through them with a concrete floor even worse as you get a massive amount of moist in the air, which creates a worse frictionless problem. Lots of places like that nowadays and nearly as bad as slippy floor surfaces which is another debate.

It's especially worse if you use Tacky rubber with spinmax. After about 2 games the balls just slip off the bat. Make sure that the ball is also cleaned regularly. If it's new it picks up the dust and grime even easier. And of course make sure the table is clean before starting.

i clean my rubbers during game and also at end of every game, just by using my breathe/hand as i think all these cleaners etc give your rubber a shorter life.
as for slippy floor depending what type of flooring it is depends on how you overcome that, i would either use damp cloth or spit or the other way is just use hand to clean the dust of depending on if its dusty or just a slippy floor!!!!!
Spitting is a yellow card offence nowadays. Make sure you don't get into the habit and do it in any official competitions.

i am used to getting yellow cards 1 more wont harm!!! lol
doing it discreetly always helps as most umpires struggle to see netcalls or foul serves so they have no chance seeing that would rather do that than be going to accident and emergency for a broken arm or something which i did after the newcastle tournament a few years ago!!!!!

I could never get an effective clean by breathing on the rubber and wiping my hand across it.
I too avoid cleaning fluids, and just use Suffolk tap water. Perhaps the dust down this way is more dustier than your way

I'd agree with this, execpt where I've had to make my backhand rubber dusty to overcome a player who was eating my hard chops for breakfast, then found themselves looping off the table for the remaing games of the match.:dance3:

perhaps one day i will have the time to tell of the fabled story of the tackiness rubbers i proceeded to ruin from a foreign gentlemans bat who was kind enough to lend me it.
walking around the worlds or europeans venue(i forget which i was rather drunk) i spotted two chaps having a knock,i asked if i could borrow his bat and have a few shots,he kindly lent me his bat,i had a shot or two then breathed on his bat to clean it then scraped it down my jeans,oh dear said the man very kindly "what the **** are you doing with the tackiness rubbers you dumb ass, oops i thought, realising my slight mistake i beat a hasty retreat after saying my thankyou,s and left for another pint of rather gorgeous ale.:dance3:
oh look i told you the story, how clever was i.
ps i think he was a german chap as he said "auf ya daft arseine" or summat like that anyway, could be dutch though.:dance3:
