Following up on the initial thread............

More than 250 players from 50 counties met at the Doncaster Dome to take part in the Butterfly Schools’ Individual Championships on 26th April 2008. This event with eight age groups, organised by the English Schools’ Table Tennis Association, is the largest one day event in the table tennis calendar, with over 12 hours of continuous on 20 tables.

The eight events witnessed seven new champions, with only Helshan Weerasinghe (Kent Co.) retaining his Under 11 Boys’ crown with a final straight games win over Sam Mabey (Leicestershire). This gave Helshan his second schools’ victory this year, having won the British Primary Schools’ Championships held in April in the Isle of Man.

Nottinghamshire players claimed two titles with Sam Walker defeating Edward Mitchell (Buckinghamshire) in the Boys’ Under 13 and Emma Vickers defeating Karina Le Fevre (Cleveland) in the Girls’ Under 19 Final.

Both Under 16 events provided much skill and entertainment, each going to a fifth deciding game. Natalie (Staffordshire) beating Lucy Davidson (Derbyshire) 11-5, 11-13, 14-12, 9-11, 13-11 and Garth Kinlocke (Avon) defeating Richard Andrews (Berkshire) 11-7, 8-11, 3-11, 11-5, 11-7.

In the Under 11 Girls Tin Tin Ho (Middlesex Met.) was victorious and repeated her British Primary Schools’ Championship success. Liam Pitchford (Derbyshire) was the winner of the Under 19 Boys and Yolanda King (East Sussex) the Under 13 Girls.

ETTA is grateful to Dennis Worrell, Championship Organiser, for a most successful event and would also like to thank Butterfly for their continued support.
