Annie, we should have a quiz on TT rules..

Annie

Whoever answers this question gets to set the next question relating to TT Rules!
Nice idea Moggy
I think it used to be at 20-all, but don't know if it is used at all now. Would be interested to know the correct answer.
Mr Wilko
04-26-2008, 06:30 PM
its not used now it would just be 10 all.
Annie

Moggy
04-26-2008, 06:55 PM
Ok, so not you keep you in suspenders...
Deuce is not a valid call in Table Tennis, you should always call 10:10 or 20:20.
Mr Wilko
04-26-2008, 08:36 PM
oh looks like my first answer was correct??????????????
Moggy
04-26-2008, 09:53 PM
its not used now it would just be 10 all.
Yep, I'd give you that one... I had assumed that you were referring to 20:20 now we are playing 11pt games.
Annie

Semantics.

Here's your starter for 10...
A player serves, the ball clips the net as it passes over to the opponents side, the ball then fails to touch the opponents side.
What should the umpire call?
Mr Wilko
04-27-2008, 02:48 PM
should call falt and give opponent point?????
Moggy
04-27-2008, 05:33 PM
nope..........:thtease:
Mr Wilko
04-27-2008, 07:26 PM
net..............................fault!!!!!!!!!!!! !!
Moggy
04-27-2008, 08:00 PM
net..............................fault!!!!!!!!!!!! !!
Actually that's what I do call, but I'm wrong in doing so!
Mr Wilko
04-27-2008, 08:11 PM
foul serve????
whenever that happens to me its called as a fault?????
Blocking Ace

I believe the appropriate comment from the umpire would be:
"Crap serve, that. Yellow card".

How about the umpire says nothing, just scores the game in the usual manner and gives a point to the recieving player.

SPOT ON!
Ok, someone else pose a new question, but not before you've tried this (only because it ties in with some of the answers given)...
net..............................fault!!!!!!!!!!!! !!
When should an Umpire call 'FAULT'?
Mr Wilko
04-28-2008, 06:41 PM
on a foul serve!!!!!!!!!
Moggy
04-28-2008, 06:45 PM
on a foul serve!!!!!!!!!
Possibly... but only in a certain situation. There is a 'proper' reason to call Fault and a foul serve isn't it.
Mr Wilko
04-28-2008, 06:53 PM
while playing doubles and the ball ends up on wrong side while serving??????
Moggy
04-28-2008, 06:55 PM
Same as the last response... It isn't the main reason to call Fault...
Mr Wilko
04-28-2008, 07:06 PM
if the ball contects with players body while playing a stroke before it hits oppenents side of table?????
(you got the rule book beside you moggy????) LOL
Moggy

Still not the main reason to call Fault... although each could cause a fault to be called. Something else needs to happen after the foul.
(you got the rule book beside you moggy????) LOL
Shhhhhhhhh.....:whistle2:
Mr Wilko
04-28-2008, 07:30 PM
the opponent hits the ball over the table, without the ball hitting there side of table!!!!
Moggy
04-28-2008, 07:35 PM
A possible reason to call Fault.... but Fault would not be called unless something happens after the foul...
Mr Wilko
04-28-2008, 08:56 PM
a streaker ran onto court then ran off with ball in his hand (tt ball that is) LOL

The players continue playing.
Moggy

The players continue playing.
You've got it!
A fault is only called to stop play i.e when a point has been awarded and the reason is not obvious or does not automatically stop play.
Time for someone else to ask a question...
Mr Wilko
04-30-2008, 07:45 PM
hey moggy that is obvious!!!! you never stop playing unless umpire calls it otherwise you can loose point!!!!!
Moggy
05-01-2008, 05:36 PM
Perhaps I shouldn't come clean everytime I double hit the ball or return it after it's hit my clothing first - I'll only stop now IF I hear 'FAULT!' :tomato:

Hey the fact is you should always play to the umpire ..........most players do but frowns are often the case if a player does this to advantage, not in any other sport does this happen as Table Tennis seems to be more gentlemen like so be ruthless and play by the rules and the umpire surely thats why he or she is there? or am i being to serious?

I can't avoid putting my hand up if it's a let now anyway, it's instinctive. Same goes for if their shot hits the edge and no one else hears it, it's a natural reaction to point and tell them they won the point.

The umpire never calls "deuce" in table tennis.

When coaching juniors I always make the point of getting them to apologise if they catch the net or edge. They look at you in disbelief at first, but soon appreciate the sentiment once they've played for a while and been on the receiving end.

I'm actually not bothered if people don't apologise, it's a fact of the game that sometimes they'll go for you, others not. Having said that (and I do tend to get a remarkable number of nets and edges in my favour a lot of the time), I'm always very apologetic myself.

I have seen a few adults get very wound up when they do not think an opponent has apologised for a net or an edge. It always seemed odd to me to apologise for something that you had no control over and quite frankly was not sorry for.
I ask juniors I coach to acknowledge a net or an edge or a lucky shot. This is done simply by raising their hand to the opponent and making sure they see it (a flat hand and not a clenched fist). Not quite an apology but part of the ettiquette of the game.

always better to be honest though if you know that it has happened!!! as i have stated in the past i would rather loose a game by beaning honest than cheating just to win you are only cheating yourself at the end of the day!!!!

Another question, since no one has posted a new one...
Why is the Right hand side of the Table Tennis court bigger than the left? (Get your rulers out!)

Easy, because who ever put the table up did not put it in the middle of the court !!

Seriously though........For doubles, each court shall be divided into 2 equal half-courts by a white centre line, 3mm wide, running parallel with the side lines; the centre line shall be regarded as part of each right half-court.

I'll have to make it harder next time (I hoped it would catch a few people out).
Well done for knowing your rules, or did you have to look it up?
