The Penultimate in the series of ten Tees-Sport Butterfly Grand Prix Events was held over the weekend of Saturday 10th and Sunday 11th of May 2008. Held at the 30 table venue of the Aldersley Leisure Village Complex, which is bordered by three golf courses and the famous Dunstall Park Horseracing track, this multi sport facility is a Mecca for any sportsperson.

Saturday’s play got under way at 9am with the Men’s band six through to band one competitions and the Women’s band three to band one tournaments.

Ladies results first. The Women’s Band One (3101-4100pts) was contested by 22 players with the title going to Sanya Clements from Hertfordshire, who out pointed Michelle Cohen (Wi) by three sets to one. The Queen of the penholders played exceptionally well throughout the event, dropping only two sets on her way to victory. She had straight sets results over Lisa Radford (Dv) in the qtr final and Gosia Muda (Mi) at the semi final stage. Michelle’s route to the final saw her dispatch Jurate Brazaityte (K) and Mary Fuller (Y) both with 3-0 scorelines.

The Women’s Band Two Event (2001-3100 pts) went to the rapidly improving Annabelle Morle from Hampshire. She is at present combining her studies and also receiving excellent coaching at the Filton Academy in Bristol. Her path to the final was by no means an easy one, having to work hard to beat Megan Phillips (Wa) the combination blade specialist, and then a hard fought win over Kirsty Wilson (K) in the semi. Her final opponent and top seed Gosia Muda(Mi) also had to dig deep to reach the final, with a spirited win over Chloe Thomas(Wa) to set up the final confrontation with Morle. Annabelle ran out a three sets to one winner to take the title.

Last in the series of the Women’s tournaments, the Band Three Event (up to 2000pts) saw Chloe Thomas (Wal) once again in the winner’s enclosure. The Welsh Wizard was in no mood for compromise taking the winner’s trophy with a straight sets win over Kirsty Wilson (K) in the concluding match. There were many special moments in this event, and of particular interest was the wonderful contest between Angharad and twin sister Megan Phillips, from North Wales in the qtr final phase. The girls put on a spectacular display and was worthy of any final, with Megan just nicking it 11-6 in the final end.

Onto the Men’s Events.
The Blue Riband Event Men’s Band 1, (3551-4300 pts) had an unusual ending! Being the last of the competitions staged, the time was fast approaching 8.30pm, and with the Centre Manager closing up shop the final could not be played. The title was shared by the two finalists, Alim Hirji (Mi) and Chris Doran (Np).

Alim was in top form gaining straight sets triumphs against Dan Kolesnik (Gs), Darren Reed (Co) and Niall Cameron (Sco) in the semi final. Chris Doran’s avenue to the final saw him gain three sets to one win over Richard Andrews (Bk), a straight sets victory past Emran Hussein (E), followed up with a gutsy win over Neil Charles (Mi) to also reach the final.

The Men’s Band 2 (2851-3550pts) crown was placed firmly on the head of Emran Hussein (E) who had a titanic struggle with Daniel Basterfield in the final. These two young Lions from Central London fought out a pulsating epic that had the spectators enjoying table tennis of the highest order in the final. Emran just shading it 11-8 in the fifth.

Ivan Lewis (Y) was victorious in the Men’s Band 3 Competition (2451-2850 pts). Ivan defeated top seed Dave Reeves (Av) in four closely fought sets in the final. Ivan grinded out wins over Chris Clinton (Y) at the last eight stage, followed up with five sets win against Daniel Basterfield (Mi) in the semi.

The Men’s Band 4 (1451-2450pts) competition winner was Kai Lu. This 26 year old Chinese student studying PhD in Pharmacy at Nottingham University enjoyed success with a gritty five set final match over the ever improving Anthony Barella (Du). Kai Lu was also responsible for taking the Men’s Band Five tournament, defeating Jack Williamson (Wa) three sets to one in the final match.

Fifteen year old Ethan Davis ( Wa ) showed great mental strength in the final of Men’s Band Six (0-800 pts), to run out a five set winner. His opponent Craig Christie(Sco) had returned to top flight table tennis after a 12 year absence, and showed that he still possessed all his skills to take Davis all the way to deuce in the fifth with some incredible rallies throughout the match.

At every Butterfly Grand Prix Event there is so much emphasis placed on the top players and their performances, so we must bear in mind that these tournaments are attended by vast numbers of players with varying abilities and ages. With this in mind we feel it’s only fair to broaden the coverage and as a first step I will feature players not always in the spotlight.

The Wolverhampton Grand Prix Player Focus highlights 13 year old Mike Lunn from Lancashire. Playing in his second Butterfly Grand Prix, the St Helens Club youngster played in band five and six. With 644 rating points under his belt, this 4’10” Mighty Atom has a very bright future in the sport. Both his group matches in Band six (rating points from 0-800) went to five nerve tingling ends with Mike showing great character to overcome Martin Freeland(Ca) 11-9 in the fifth, and then again play some great offensive shots to beat Adam Thomas( Wa) 17-15 in the final leg. Mike is one of four brothers and really loves his table tennis. Trained in Merseyside by the well known top 20 senior Kevin Dolder, this young man is an exciting prospect. Mike went on to defeat Matt Rogers(Do) in straight sets in round 1, however his progress was halted in the 2nd round by Craig Christie(Sco) who proved far too experienced for Mike, thus ending his run in band six.

On Saturday afternoon Mike competed in Men’s Band five (ratings from 801-1500) and these players would be tough nuts to crack. In the initial group stage he got off to a flying start by pulling off a surprise win against the famous Tim Pang (Ha) in five sets, and then went on to outplay Craig Teeney (Sx), but his winning run faltered losing out to Welsh number 1 cadet, Huw Jones, whose experience and extra energy caught Mike out. Lunn progressed as group runner up, to the preliminary round where he stormed past Alan Caffrey(Wa), but met his match in the first round of band five coming up against the more experienced Ethan Davies (Wa), losing out in four very close sets. Well done Mike, a great day’s performance. We hope to see you at the EIS in Sheffield in three years!

Day Two ......................

Its not always about the winning that matters it’s the taking part.
Mel Lumanlan, a Philippine now living in West Bromwich entered his first ever Butterfly Grand Prix this weekend and although only winning one match in his group really enjoyed the experience, as he had brought his wife and three children along to support him. The look on their faces told the story, they enjoyed watching their father compete and had a good time.

An announcement was made which followed a short silence in memory of Barbara Kiss who passed away in her native Hungary earlier this week. Barbara was a great table tennis player, having been a previous Grand Prix Women’s Series Winner, and will be sadly missed.

The Men’s Open groups were soon started and on paper you would have to fancy the overall winner coming from one of the Chinese hotshots in the form of Jiang Chang Hong (winner of the London Grand Prix), or his London Progress team mate Hong Ming Zhang (winner of the Blackpool and Medway Grand Prix’s).

As we all know its what happens on the day, and certainly young Darius Knight had not read this script. He was simply playing some of his best table tennis throughout the morning’s play to write his own headlines. Placed in the top half of the draw he was cruising his way to the semi final with wins over Patrick Thomas, Roman Doryn and Stephen Jenkins.
There awaited Hong Ming Zhang, who had just defeated his Chinese club mate, Jiang Chang Hong in the qtr final. This turned out to be a great match with the Chinese Hong’s going at each other hammer and tongs. There was so much to enjoy in this match with the usual Oriental magic long topspin rallies end to end. With Hong Ming gaining the upper hand at two sets to one up and at 9-6 up, following an incredible rally, Jiang Chang Hong tried to retrieve an impossible wide topspin shot and in doing so crashed into the barriers. He had sustained a swollen ankle and although given time and ice pack treatment could not really continue.
So it was Hong Ming Zhang that came through to face Darius in the first semi final. Hong Ming was quickly into his stride taking the first end 11-6 against Knight, however Darius came back with all guns blazing to take the next three sets in great style to reach the final.

Meanwhile in the bottom half of the draw there was more drama unfolding. The talented left hander Mark Simpson was gaining a surprise yet well deserved win over Mike Marsden to reach the last eight. Damien Nicholls once again (as he had at the London GP) took a famous win over Gavin Rumgay to reach the semi. With all this going on, Ryan Jenkins was making stealthy progress to reach the last eight. There he met Mark Simpson, overpowering this opponent to face Damien Nicholls. Jenkins ran out a comfortable three sets winner to reach the final.

A see saw epic final then ensued with Darius seeming to take the early initiative, going two sets to love up. The Welsh Dragon then appeared, with Jenkins clawing back the deficit to level the match at two sets all. The last end went point for point until Knight conjured up some great shot making to edge his way past the gallant Jenkins, taking the title, 11-8 in the fifth.

The Women’s Singles title went to the unstoppable Xu Shuying. She was simply in a class of her own. Her final Opponent Sanja Clements tried her best, however she was not in the same league as Shuying. There were some excellent matches in this event. Mary Fuller enjoyed a great result over Liu Meihan in the group stage and then recorded another fine win over Hannah Hicks to reach the qtrs. Her run came to an end losing out in the fifth end to the Devon Queen Sally Smith. Sally had no answers for Sanja in the semi final. In top half Xu Shuying was making light work of Rachel Jamieson and Stephanie Donnelly to cruise to the final. Xu Shuying took the winners cheque and looks assured now to be crowned Women’s Grand Prix Champion at the Hereford Grand Prix in June with an unassailable point’s tally.

The Under 21 Men’s Event winner was once again Damien Nicholls. He is making a habit of winning this event and capped off a great day’s performance by earlier in the day recording a gutsy win over Gavin Rumgay in the Men’s Open.

The Women’s Under 21 title went to Lisa Radford from Devon. Her final opponent Hannah Hicks had her chances in this match, leading two sets to one up and 8-2 in the fourth end. However Radford somehow levelled the match with some very patient topspin attacking play against the defence of Hicks and in a tense final end came through a very worthy champion.
This event also witnessed some wonderful matches, in particular the qtr final game with Caroline Hallows and Annabelle Morle that was worthy of any final. Hallows seeming out of the event staring at a 6-0 deficit in the final end, somehow managed to get her head in front when it mattered coming through 12-10 in the fifth.

The Winner of the Tees Sport player of the Tournament and a £50 voucher went to Chloe Thomas of Wales.

Me and Andrew Leighton were supposed to play in the final of the 21's in the Durham closed a few years back when the tournament ran out of time. We said we would play it at club some time. I'm now 23 and it still hasn't been played!

Perhaps it was because there was money at stake by being the overall Vets grand prix champ for the season....Or the kudos ?

I cannot believe that at a grand prix tournament this could be allowed to happen....can you imagine this happening at any other major event. Are the people running these facilities interested in sport ? Its a joke. The organisers should vow never to use this venue again.
