Well for those of you who have paid attention and read between the lines you will know that I am not as fit as many of you. My recent health issues have fired me up and I have a number of goals I would like to achieve. It occurred to me that a few of you may also have goals that you keep saying you will one day achieve but never get around to. Well our time is now!
I for one do solemnly swear that I will partake in a Marathon in 2010! http://www.tabletennistalk.co.uk/forum/images/icons/wave.gif
What fitness goal would you like to go for and when by?
I think it would be interesting to follow each other's progress.

When it comes to reading between lines methinks oft times I'm a bit dyslexic... however, I believe I gleaned the gist of things pursuant to context.
An interesting topic as I've not actually pondered "goals" of any sort at this juncture. I've more than a fair share of musculo-skelatal lissues as I've made quite clear. Sometimes I'm thrilled to have a pain free hour now and then.
One thing that's been problematic since I quit smoking 2.5 years ago has been the fluctuation of weight. Most especially since I work in a chocolate factory and the stuff is everywhere... too often it's easier to grab something off the snack trays than eat properly. And to me chocolate can be an addiction. I'm OK if I don't partake at all... but let me consume one M&M and I'm off to the races....
My current weight is about 203lbs. which is down from the alltime high of 218 a year ago. Ideally, I would like to see 185 once again. Sorry for the yank units of measure... I don't have my "convertor" here... and actully... I'll have to check at work... not sure if it converts lbs. to stone...
So perhaps should I put forth a little thought when it comes to :fcb: .... especially all the insalubrious comestibles so profligate throughout my working realm... things will improve.
Actually... that's how I lost the 15lbs to begin with. Swear OFF the M&M's. I need to re-instate the mantra: EXCERSIZE RESTRAINT.
As to Marathons? God bless and best wishes to your success there. At 48 years of age I would join you... provided I could ride along on one of my Vintage Raleighs. :rocker: To make it a comparable effort... I'll roll on the Tourist. A "Proper" bike most assuredly.... and not at all the like "rolling clouds" that are in favour with the velocipede crowd of late.

There are 14lbs to a stone so I'll let you work that one out.
As for giving up smoking I know exactly what you mean, I gave up over 5 years ago and although I have always been a handful, all of a sudden you needed another set of hands to give me a cuddle.
And as for how many lbs I weigh currently?

I'd like to do a marathon, but I'd like to do the London one and I've got two hopes of that... one's called Bob and the other one begins with 'n' and ends with 'o'.

Why is that Chris?
I've really started to think about it and when I do one it won't be in Wolverhampton. Can you just imagin bumping into someone you haven't see for years whilst trying to kill yourself? :bag:
I used to enjoy the odd Marathon, things have never been the same since they changed their name to 'Snickers'

Ah... a little Mars Inc. Confectionery history here... Originally, the Marathon Bar was a loooong braid of chocolate coated caramel... and discontinued quite some time ago as I recall.
Snickers was invented by either Frank or Forrest Mars almost 100 years ago.
The latest "Marathon" bars are actually "line extensions" of the Snickers brand. A rather succesful foray into the realm of "energy bars"
Oddly enough... we were cleaning out the -40F freezer a couple of months back.... and came across some VO2 Max bars... the first foray unto the realm quite some time ago....
They were 10 years old and having been in the deep freeze.... (not that I tried one) quite palatable....
To be honest... sadly... the PBMax bar didn't stand up in the market. They were awesome.
Snickers originally made it to the UK called 'Marathon', and had its name changed to match the rest of the world probably about 15 years ago.

Well I'll be. I'm aghast that I was unaware.... being a Mars Associate... but then, I'm on the other side of the pond.
What is referred to as a "Mars" bar in EU is called a "Milky Way" bar... and that was it's original name. In fact... as I recall... do not Mars Bars carry a reference to being an "energy bar"?
Milky Way Midnight USED to be Milky Way Dark... and if you're old enough to remember it's original name... "Forever Yours"... then we're about the same age.
And of course... and it's interesting... the original Mars Almond Bar in the U.S. was renamed SNICKERS Almond.... and sales went mad....
BTW: According to statistics... the Snickers Bar (OK... Previously MARATHON in the UK) is the best selling candy bar in the world.
Enough digressive bloviation...
Even if somewhat belated... my best birthday wishes to Annie.

OK I'm looking for some competition. Is anyone else going to put their hand up and commit to a Goal? It can be anything as long as it is a physical challenge.
Also I would welcome any tips on my challenge. I haven't run for many years so I have a long way to go to attempt a Marathon but it's something I really would like to do. That's why I've set a realistic target of 2010. So how do I go about it safely?
O and please consider my age of 45 :resent:

Why is that Chris?
Because you either have to be in the top n percentage of runners in the country (or have to be entered by your running club or something), or you have to raise a certain amount of money for charity (and I believe the figure is quite high.)
Snickers originally made it to the UK called 'Marathon', and had its name changed to match the rest of the world probably about 15 years ago.
I think they're changing it back to Marathon now, aren't they?

History
In 1930 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1930), the Mars family introduced its second product, Snickers, named after one of their favorite horses.[1] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Snickers#cite_note-snickfaq-0)
In the early 2000s (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2000s), deep fried chocolate bars (including Snickers, and Mars bars (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deep_fried_Mars_Bar)) became popular at U.S. state fairs (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/State_fair) and and Australia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Australia), although they had been a local specialty in some Scottish (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scotland) fish and chip shops (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fish_and_chips) since at least the mid-1990s (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1990s)[6] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Snickers#cite_note-5) in spite of containing over 850 calories per bar when prepared in this fashion. [7] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Snickers#cite_note-6)
In 2006 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2006), the UK Food Commission highlighted celebrity chef Antony Worrall Thompson (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Antony_Worrall_Thompson)'s "Snickers pie"[8] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Snickers#cite_note-7), which contained five Snickers bars among other ingredients, suggesting it was one of the unhealthiest desserts ever; one slice providing "over 1,250 calories (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Calories) from sugar and fat alone", more than half a day's requirement for an average adult. The pie had featured on his BBC (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BBC) Saturday programme some two years earlier and the chef described it as an occasional treat only.[9] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Snickers#cite_note-8)
[edit (http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Snickers&action=edit§ion=2)] Renaming in UK and Ireland
In the UK and Ireland, it was originally sold under the name "Marathon".[3] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Snickers#cite_note-christian-2) Mars standardised many of its global brand names and the name was changed to Snickers. For a few months before the name changed, the words "Internationally known as Snickers" were printed on the side of the Marathon wrapper.[citation needed (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Citation_needed)]
For eighteen months thereafter, both names were retained on the wrapper — first with "Marathon", then with "Snickers" in larger letters.[3] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Snickers#cite_note-christian-2) The change of name attracted some criticism in Britain, and became a common cultural reference.[citation needed (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Citation_needed)]
In May 2008, Mars announced that the name would be changed back to Marathon in the UK on a 3-month trial basis.
It would appear you are correct

Kewl stuff. What interests me is in the US we have a number of "Energy Bars" called Snickers Marathon. Different formulas for different... shall we say "uses" and / or athletic purposes. Now... I've always felt tautology a fine art... here it's the Snickers Marathon bar....
Dunno how well the Marathon Marathon bar would fly. Could very well be they're entirely different outside of the US.
I do have the goal of 185lbs.... not yet set a date... perhaps that's why I'm not gettin there. ;-)

I don't think that is strictly true.
These things would guarantee you entry. There is also a lottery system for other (ordinary) people who want to enter.
It is down to luck if you get drawn or not, although if you fail to get in three times then you are guaranteed a spot on the 4th attempt. I am not sure of the number of accepted entrants versus the number of rejected ones so have no idea how likely you are to get in.

There is a chance ! I just do not know how much of a chance.
Someone I work with has been rejected for the last 3 years but I know at least two others who got in on their first application.

Well... OK... so the last one's a bit fashed... The first two are pretty good.
Now go get 'em! ;-)
