Emily Bates (Li) and Daniel Basterfield (Mi) stole the show on the opening day at the Butterfly Medway Grand Prix, held at the Black Lion Leisure Centre, Gillingham in Kent. Emily and Daniel both juniors neither having played a senior Grand Prix event, made an instant impact by taking home two titles each. Twelve year old Emily walked away with the women’s band 2 and band 3 tittles and in doing so outplayed another junior Melissa Wright (Ys) in both finals.
TTK Greenhouse player Daniel, with his aggressive topspin attacking play dominated men’s band 3 and 4, overcoming senior players en route to his double success.
Other highlights of the day were; Adam Trela (Mi) the defensive pimpled player enjoying success in men’s band 6, and narrowly missing out in the band 5 final to Adam Ratajczak (Av)
Rachel Jamieson (E) was at the top of her game taking the ladies band one title with her devastating offensive play to overpower Sally Smith (Dv).
Men’s band two went to the rapidly improving Reading youngster Richard Andrews (Bk) who outshone Daniel Ives (K) in the final.
Neil Charles (Mi) found a rich vein of form to take the men’s band one crown. On his way to victory he took out the number one seed Tom Cutler at the penultimate stage. Despite a spirited fight from second seed Niall Cameron in the final, Charles was just too strong for the Scottish international.
