This weekend, 14th and 15th June, sees the finals of the English Leagues Cup Competitions being played at the Draycott and Long Eaton Table Tennis Centre in Derbyshire.
The Bromfield Trophy (Junior Girls) and Carter Cup (Junior Boys) matches will be held on Saturday starting at 10am. Top seeds are North Middlesex and West Cornwall for the Bromfield Trophy and Reading A and West Cornwall for the Carter Cup.
The Wilmott Cup (Men) and J M Rose Bowl (Women) matches being played on Sunday will also start at 10am. Bedford A and Nottingham are the top seeds in the Wilmott Cup whilst Leicester and Bournemouth take the top spots in the J M Rose Bowl.
The four competitions were re-introduced this season in a new format with four singles and one doubles being played in all matches. 33 leagues in total have taken part.
A little bit of history
The Wilmott Cup was originally presented by A J Wilmott in 1934 for a National Men’s Team Competition. The first year of competition saw the Manchester League victors with 24 entries from the 71 leagues then in existence. The original cup was destroyed in 1940 when the ETTA offices in London were bombed.
The J M Rose Bowl was donated in 1938 by J M Rose, President of the South London Table Tennis League. The first winners were Exeter and 48 teams entered the event.
The Bromfield Trophy and Carter Cup competitions are more recent, both starting in the 1965/66 season when East London beat Birmingham in both finals.
A lady by the name of Connie Moran was the Grimsby League Tournament Secretary for the J M Rose Bowl in 1959. Many of you will know Connie is still going strong with her involvement in table tennis including umpiring at this season’s Cadet and Junior Nationals. Quite an achievement.

After a successful and enjoyable first day, day two got off to a bad start when just before the first matches were to go on it was reported one team was not able to make the event for the Wilmott Cup. This left five teams in the finals. After consultation with those teams present it was agreed to play a round robin with matches being played to a result only. Some swift re-scheduling by Referee, Steve Welch, and matches were underway.

Wilmott Cup
The contest was now between Aldershot, Bournemouth, Ilford, Nottingham and Potteries.
Nottingham got off to a good start beating Potteries 3 – 1 and Aldershot 3 – 0. Top seeded Nottingham, Shaun Marples and Adam Frost, had a fairly comfortable win against Aldershot but were pushed harder against Potteries although Russell Boone had a superb win against Shaun Marples in the second match taking the fifth 14 – 12, despite some other close games this was the only win for the Potteries. The Potteries tasted success against Ilford 3 – 1 although Ilford’s Matt Spero and Didier Ngoma had a fine win in the doubles, 13 – 11 in the fifth. Bournemouth’s first match against Aldershot saw some tight matches with Bournemouth ending up 3 –1 winners, Graham Watts had a good win against Bournemouth’s Mark Butler in the first match but Matt Ware got the better of Graham in the fourth match and ensured Bournemouth’s first win. Aldershot’s match against Ilford saw Ilford win 3 – 0.

Another fine doubles win for Potteries, this time Brian Johns and Mark Evans defeating Robin Pretty and Graham Watts of Aldershot, 11 – 5 in the fifth, giving Potteries an overall win of 3 – 1. Bournemouth had a straight 3 – 0 win over Ilford which set them up for the crunch match against Nottingham. Nottingham started well with Adam Frost winning 3 – 0 against Mark Butler. Matt Ware evened the score in three straight against Shaun Marples. The doubles went to four and Nottingham came out on top, Matt Ware again levelled the score in the fourth match making it a full house of wins. Two games all. Bracknell and Wokingham put up a spirited defence against the youngsters of Guildford leading 2 – 0 with wins from Mary Allan and Denise Rolfe. Guildford doubles pair of Feifei and Lucy Burks took the third, they were on a roll with Lucy Burks winning the next singles and Lucy Lou had a very impressive five set win to take the match. No tournament can run without it’s officials and much appreciation must go to Steve and Margaret Welch (Referee and Assistant), the hard working band of umpires and the ETTA Events staff of Matt Porter and Vanda Jones. Thanks must also be expressed to Keith Ponting, Competitions Vice Chairman, Alex Murdoch, ETTA Chairman, and National Council for supporting the running of these championships in their new format this season. A special thank you to the Brian Savage and his team at Draycott and Long Eaton Table Tennis Centre for their hospitality. Brian had worked tirelessly before and during the event even setting up a live interview on Radio Derby.
