Everyone present at the final day’s play of the Butterfly Medway Grand Prix, held at the Black Lion Leisure Centre in Gillingham, Kent, were treated to a display of Oriental table tennis magic. The Men’s and Women’s Open Singles titles both went to our resident visitors from the Far East.

Eighteen year old Hong Ming Zhang now training at London Progress club was in a different class as he swept all aside to take the Men’s Open title. Following his straight sets win over Dale Barham in the semi final, to then set up an all-Chinese final encounter against Wang Zheng, the resident Chinese player at Peniel Academy.

Wang Zheng had earlier disposed of the number 1 seed, Jason Sugrue in the other semi final, in four sets. The all Chinese final was a relatively comfortable victory for Hong Ming Zhang, with an awesome display of power packed shots.

The Ladies Open was also a one sided affair with the title going to Katie Shu Ying (Peniel Academy). Katie was simply sensational, coming through to overpower Egley Adomelyte (London Progress) winning in straight sets.
En route to the title, Katie played through the defensive skills of Hannah Hicks. Hannah, unseeded, had her work cut out to reach the semi final with a gritty performance over Jurate Brazaityte. Egley, on her way to the final had a great win over the defensive style of Maria Meihan (Peniel Academy),
in the other semi final, to then have to face Katie in the ladies open final.

The Men’s under 21 title went to Richard Andrews who had a tough four set final triumph against Remigiyus Petrosius. Richard had earlier despatched top seed David McBeath and then survived a demanding encounter with player of the weekend Daniel Basterfield in the semi final.

Rachel Jamieson was crowned women’s under 21 Champion after coming through hard matches against 12 year old Emily Bates in the final, and Sally Smith in the semi. Emily to, enjoyed a good win over Melissa Wright to take her place in the final.

Adrian Moore took the Men’s Veterans title, whilst Jojo Senorin won the restricted Men’s event.
