Was it this her non-selection at this event that has made Rachel Jamieson (number 4 junior and number 14 senior) decide that she no longer wants to compete for England ?

On a day at the European Youth Championships in Terni, Italy where mainly it was made over to doubles nobody expected what was to come in the one round of singles.
The Cadet Boys played first, Liam 2-1 up and 10-6, Gavin 2-0 and 7-1, the lights went out, for almost half and hour all was in darkness. When the lights came back on both continued as they had before Liam winning 4-1 over Tomas Wisniewski of Poland and Gavin taking a fairly comfortable 4-0 win over Irfan Cetic of Montenegro.
The blackout mucked up all the schedule and in the Junior Boys Singles, Darius Knight had played superbly to beat Martin Heimberger in 4 straight sets in double quick time. Nothing in that which had gone before portended the next match.
Paul Drinkhall started, just as Darius finished, against Phillip Floritz. Paul was certainly not playing as his best and Floritz, playing really well, raced to a 2-0 lead. Paul recovered in the 3rd and reduced the deficit to 2-1. A poor start in the fourth game and Paul was in serious trouble 3-1 down needing to win three straight games to retain his chance for the Championship.
Still not playing his dominant best Paul fought and fought and fought, Father Andy in the stands lost years in the process as did several other spectators, 5th set 11-8 to Paul, 6th set 11-5 to Paul. So to a stupendous 7th set, Paul was 0-2 down, 2-4 down, changed ends at 4-5 down but from 8-8 he upped a gear and played 3 superb points to complete what could only be described as a stupendous comeback.
Only one round of singles the rest of the day was given to doubles, no real frights for our seeded pairs who all proceeded through to their assigned places without much trouble.
The two Cadet Girls Doubles pairs are still there to fight another day tomorrow as well

England's Boys were dominant today at the European Youth Championships in Terni, Italy. 9 Medals is a tally never matched by an England Squad at the European Youth. Who knows what colour they will be, that is for tomorrow. In a very busy penultimate day England players played 26 main event matches and won 22 of them
There were so many great performances from all our top players it is difficult to know where to start but maybe the performances in the Cadet Boys Singles epitomise the spirit and desire that all the players displayed
Gavin Evans had a hard day starting against Quentin Robinot of France in the last 16 he let a two set lead slip to 2-3 before recovering to win the match 4-3.
His quarter final performance however surpassed that in every way. Playing Luca Fucec of Croatia it was the same but much much worse.
Again Gavin raced into a 2 set lead only to be pegged back to 2-2 and then 3-3. The big hitting Croatian was giving Gavin all sorts of trouble and when Fucec stood 10-6 up in the seventh set who would have thought it was possible for Gavin to progress, it was, Fucec maybe hit a little safer, Gavin maybe hit a little harder and 6-10 became 10-10 and finally 14-12.
Liam Pitchford in the other half of the draw had no such problems, playing at a level he could only have dreamed about a few months ago he first dispatched Ondrej Bajger of the Czech Republic in 4 straight sets in the last 16. In the quarter finals he faced Dorian Nicolle and repeated the performance winning once again in 4 straight sets.
In the Junior Boys Singles both Paul Drinkhall and Darius Knight were on top form, in the last 16 Paul took on Victorien Le Guen of France and was in total control, the 4th set slipped away on deuce but that was quickly recovered as Paul ran out a 4-1 winner. At the same time Darius Knight was busy matching that performance against Piotr Chojnowski of Poland. A bit tighter this one, and again the fourth set slipped away but again the fifth set was claimed by the England player.
In the quarter finals, Paul Drinkhall took on another Pole, Pawel Fertikowski and totally dominated taking the match in 4 straight sets. Darius Knight's opponent was Belgian Florent Lamoque. Once again Darius was in charge, once again a set slipped away, the third this time but nothing could halt the progress of a Darius Knight playing right at the top of his game and a 4-1 win ensued.
The Cadet Doubles provided the only losses of the day, neither Cadet Girls doubles team could progress past the second round. Karina Lefevre and Martha Travis lost to a Serbian/French combination in 4 sets while the Luxembourg pair of Tessy Gonderinger and Annick Stammet were to strong for Emily Bates and Lucy Davidson although it took the full five sets to decide the outcome.
In the Cadet Boys Doubles, Gavin Evans was busy, busy again, playing with Cedric Nuytinck of Belgium. In their third round match they had little trouble moving to the last 16 with a 3 straight set win over a Hungarian pair.
Against a Slovak Republic pair in the last 16 there was a titanic struggle with Gavin and Cedric just prevailing 11-8 in the fifth set.
The Quarter final match was another hard fought battle, as the Serbian pair of Subotic and Dalea were finally defeated 11-9 in the fifth set
Liam Pitchford and Daniel Lowe also progressed to the quarter finals with a 3 straight defeat of a Romanian pair in the 3rd round. In the last 16 a hard-fought 5 set win over a Russian pair gave them a quarter final place.
The quarter final match however was the only disappointment in a quarter final for the England squad. The French pair, number 1 seeds Romain Lorentz and Simon Gauzy were just too strong taking the match in 3 straight sets.
The Junior Boys Doubles saw Paul Drinkhall progress to the semi finals with wins over Kobes and Jezo of Slovakia, 3 straight in the last 16 and in the quarter finals David Steinle and Erik Bottroff of Germany were dispatched 3 sets to 1.
The Cadet Mixed doubles was again a disappointment for Liam Pitchford as he and his Romanian partner Roxana Istrate lost in the last 16 to Simon Gauzy of France and Bernatette Szocs of Romania. Gavin Evans playing with Petrissa Solja of Germany, seeded 1, had a tough battle in the last 16 against his Boys Doubles partner Cedric Nuytinck of Belgium who was playing with Tessa Gonderinger of Luxembourg, it took all 5 set but the number 1 seeds prevailed. The quarter final was easier as the Spanish pair of Hortal and Fernandez were dispatched in 3 straight sets.
In the Junior Mixed Doubles, second seeds Paul Drinkhall, playing with Yekaterina Kolodyazhnaya of Russia, and top seeds Darius Knight partnered with Amelie Solja were relatively untroubled as they progressed through the last 16 and quarter finals.
Finally as the top players were performing miracles elsewhere, Sean Cullen also reached a semi final in the Cadet Boys Consolation event.
