Stage 1 at the European Youth, Terni
The stage 1 groups are now complete at the European Youth Championships in Terni, Italy.
In halls which are closer to being saunas than table tennis halls both the Junior Boys and Cadet Boys emerged undefeated. Paul Drinkhall, Gavin Evans and Liam Pitchford are to date unbeaten
The Cadet boys dominated their group with both Gavin Evans and Liam Pitchford undefeated in either singles or doubles afer three matches. Spain, Germany and finally Italy were all equally treated to a 3-0 defeat.
The Junior Boys had to fight harder particularly as that event is three person teams. Who to play at no 3 is obviously going to be the coaches problem as all three potential candidates had a run out in the first three matches but none could take a win, Chris Doran came closest losing in five sets to Diogo Carvalho in the 3-1 defeat of Portugal. Paul Drinkhall (2) and Darius Knight (1) were winners in the other matches
The first match however was the greatest test when the boys came through 3-2 against a strong german team. Darius just lost the first, deuce in the fifth to Erik Bottroff which put the team on the back foot. Paul Drinkhall steadied the ship with a 5 set win over David Steinle but Damian Nicholls went down in 3 sets to the German No 3 Philipp Floritz. Paul Drinkhall also went to deuce in the fifth against Bottroff but it was Paul who took it this time and Darius finished off with a strong display against Steinle winning three straight.
The last match was another 3-1 win this time against Norway, Matthew Ware got the run out at no 3 in this one and lost three sets to one against Pi Aars, Paul Drinkhall (2) and Darius Knight (1) were winners in the other matches
The Girls found the competition much harder, both were playing in the class 2 groups having finished outside the top 16 in the last championships in Bratislava.
First to finish were the Cadet Girls, a group of three, A 3-1 win over Sweden, Lucy Davidson lost the first but Emily Bates took both her singles and the doubles with Karina Lefevre. The second match was the reverse this time with Emily losing both her singles and the doubles with Lucy Davisdon, Karina Lefevre took the solitary England game with a 3 set to one win over Karin Adamkova. This placed the girls second in their group as the Czech Republic whitewashed Sweden 3-0 in the last match of the group.

The Junior Girls had a group of 4 teams, 2 3-0 defeats to Netherlands and Sweden meant that 3rd was the best the girls could acheive, and that is exactly what happened as a 3-1 win over Armenia finished off the 1st Stage. Two for Mary Fuller and one from Natalie Stater. Marth Travis came close but lost a tight one in the fifth set.
The second stage begins tomorrow, the boys are still in position A to claim medals in their respective championships, the girls have to battle for the highest possible place they can now obtain.

Follow up on the European Youth............

It was a really good day for the England teams at the European Youth Championships in Terni, Italy
The Cadet Boys continued their dominance of the opposition by stoming through Romania 3-0.

The usual story of a 3-1 win for the Junior boys, again the game lost was at no 3, Matthew Ware looked so like he was going to break the No 3 duck but it was not to be as he lost 9-11 in the fifth. Paul Drinkhall 2 games and Darius Knight 1 game took the match.

Both Boys teams are now in the quarter finals which will be played tomorrow as will the semi finals which hopefully will be occupied by England teams. The Junior Boys face Sweden in their Quarter Final while the Cadet Boys face Belgium

The Junior Girls had a super day and found winning very much to their liking, a 3-0 win over Iceland was not a great surprise as the Icelandic girls are not very competitive but a 3-1 win in the afternoon over Latvia, where Martha Travis just lost the first game 14-16 in the fifth set, Natalie Slater took 2 and Mary Fuller 1 was followed by a 3-0 defeat of Finland with one each for Martha, Natalie and Mary, they now play tomorrow for places 29-32 against the other winners of groups O-R.
The Cadet Girls are fighting for places 17-28 and completed the undefeated day with a win over Greece, they face Bosnia & Hertzegovina tomorrow which will be a tough one.
Paul Drinkhall, Gavin Evans and Liam Pitchford are all still undefeated but the opposition gets just that bit stronger each round and it will be interesting to see how it all goes tomorrow.

The Junior Girls began proceedings on this the busiest day of the whole European Youth Championships in Terni, Italy.

Neither was able to make much impression on the Dutch opponents, Natalie Slater went down 4-0 to Suzanne Dieker while Mary Fuller only went one set better losing 4-1 to Tali Cohen.

The story in the Junior Boys was much better, although Matt Ware missed out having injured a leg yesterday. Damian Nicholls had a first round win over Peter Tomasson of Iceland but found Matic Slodej of Slovenia too strong in the 2nd round going down 1-4.

Chris Doran had two excellent wins over Anton Sopeleu of Belarus and Nathan Van de Lee of Holland in the first two rounds to earn him a place with the higher seeds in the third round. a good fight against Florent Lamoque in the third round however went to the Belgian 2-4. Paul Drinkhall needed a game or two to find his feet but came out a 4-2 winner over Julio Reyes of Spain whilst Darius Knight comfortably moved past Taras Merzlikin 4-0.

The Cadet Girls had some success in the 1st round as both Emily Bates and Lucy Davidson had good wins, Martha Travis found her Polish opponent too strong going down 4-1 while Karina Lefevre, who had gone very close in the team event to the same opponent, just could not find the same form going down 4-0.

The Cadet Boys lost Sean Cullen in the first round as he could not match Romanian no 2 Sziland Kanabe, but Daniel Lowe did progress beating Michal Bankosz of Poland but in the second round Lucas Jandora of the Czech Republic was too strong winning 4-2.

Gavin Evans the No 1 seed still has not started in this competition as he had a first round bye and a second round walk over. Liam Pitchford who was also seeded had little problem disposing of his 2nd round opponent, Otto Tennila of Finland
