Things are hotting up in the table tennis, as we reach the men’s last 16 it has become a battle of two continents, Asia, with 8 competitors from China, Japan, Hong Kong, Singapore and South Korea, and Europe which have 8 competitors from Germany, Croatia, Sweden, Belarus, Austria and Greece.

There has only been one big upset so far, as Seung Min Ryu from South Korea, ranked at number five at time of qualification, went out to Lai Chark Ko of Hong Kong in the last 32.

Plus......The women’s event has now reached the quarter-finals, with three of the four matches containing a Chinese player, only Chen Wang of the USA and Xue Wu from the Dominican Republic can stop a Far Eastern deadlock in the medals.

The biggest shocks going into the quarter-finals are the absence of Yue Gu Wang from Singapore and Japans Ai Fukuhara who qualified for the Olympics as third and fifth favourites respectively. Ai Fukuhara made it as far as the last 16 before being beaten 4-1 by Chains Yinig Zhang, where as Yue Gu Wang had a much earlier than expected departure in the last 32 at the hands of Xue Wu from the Dominican Republic, also by 4-1.

Yinig Zhang (CHN) v Tianwei Feng (SIN)
Chen Wang (USA) v Jia Wei Li (SIN)
Nan Wang (CHN) v Yana Tie (HKG)
Xue WU (DOM) v Yue Guo (CHN)

Well looks like it's a final between Yinig Zhang (CHN) and Nan Wang (CHN) who wasn't in the top 20 so well done to her.

Guo Yue (CHN) and Li Jiawei (SIN) are fighting it out for the Bronze Medal. Could it be an all China Podium stand? :fcb:
