Yeam GB has just achieved it's second gold in the Women's 400m Freestyle. Rebecca Adlington well done http://www.tabletennistalk.co.uk/forum/images/icons/clap.gif

..and a bronze in the same event. I watched it on the BBC web site this morning (which, by the way, appears to be overloaded now) and she just came from nowhere, she paced it superbly well.
I see Tracey Hallam has been knocked out of the badminton.

OK.. so by the looks of it, our fella in the judo (Ewan Burton) got knocked out at quarter-final stage, so he'll be battling for a bronze medal. Joe Murphy just got pummelled by a Chinese bloke in the boxing and we have a man in the canoe slalom final.
Not all doom and gloom, apparently we are one of the favourites for the canoe slalom!
MK Chris

Woo! Silver in the canoe slalom, well done David Florence!

I've just seen an incredible fightback by Gail Emms and Nathan Robertson (who, incidentally, train at the National Badminton Centre in Milton Keynes), knocking the Chinese second seeds out in three sets.
17-12 down to win, what a final leg!

Bronze in the eventing.. not a bad day today!
MK Chris
08-12-2008, 04:52 PM
Bronze in the individual eventing as well for Tina Cook!
Incidentally, 'eventing' is such a silly name, when the whole Olympics is a big event made up of smaller events.

Right.... today, we have done well - only one medal (to Emma Pooley in the women's time trial), but we've been going well in the rowing. Our coxless fours won their semi-final, with the winner of that semi hotly tipped to win the final - probably even more so with shock exits in the other semi. Our double sculls came third in their semi and are through to the final and our single sculls fella was second to qualify as well.
The weekend is looking good for GB medals, I reckon!
Annie
08-13-2008, 01:38 PM
Well we've got a bit of catching up to do that's for sure :resent:

Hmm... the women's 4x200m freestyle relay team royally mess up their heat, finishing sixth and therefore not making the final. Rrrrubbish! Apparently we were expected to get a medal in that.
Annie
08-13-2008, 01:56 PM
I'm sure they feel worse than us.
MK Chris
08-13-2008, 02:44 PM
They rested our best swimmer for the final apparently, which is always a dangerous tactic. Unless you're American and your reserves are also world beaters.
The Murrays are out of the tennis.. Andy must be pleased, he can go and prepare for the US now. Oops, did I say that?!
I'm sure I just caught a glimpse of Matthew Syed in the BBC live stream, perhaps they're going to show some table tennis soon.

We're playing the Netherlands at hockey at the moment and the score is 0-0 with 25 or so minutes of the second half to go (I believe they play in halves as opposed to thirds or quarters?)
Woo, table tennis on the live stream now...
MK Chris
08-13-2008, 03:30 PM
The Dutch have beaten us 1-0 in the hockey, so it's all over for our men (not sure if we're still in the ladies?) David Price, our Super Heavyweight is about to box a Russian fella I think.
MK Chris
08-13-2008, 03:40 PM
Well that was something of a turnaround.. Price was 2-0 down after the first round, I took a phone call and by the time I got back to my screen, he'd knocked the guy out!

Not a great day in terms of medals and finals today, but we've got Emms and Robertson to cheer on in the badminton, another boxer (haven't they done well! OK Billy Joe Saunders is out, but we've still got a strong contingent there) and Mark Foster's swimming soon as well.
Plus, the weekend is round the corner and we can expect lots of lovely medals.. preferably of the gold variety!
MK Chris
08-14-2008, 12:11 PM
Mark Foster is now out, having finished sixth in his 50m freestyle heat. Badminton is about to start.

That's disappointing
MK Chris
08-14-2008, 12:54 PM
1-0 down and 5-7 down in the badminton.. Rebecca Adlington, however, has swum the 800m freestyle in the second fastest time ever, eclipsing the rest of the field and setting a new Olympic record!

I think I should ease up on the updates... perhaps I'll do one whenever Britain win a medal and a summary at the end of the day! Otherwise there are quadruple posts all over the place from me.
Anyway, so far Kelly Sotherton is going well, currently in fifth after two heptathlon events; our women's lightweight double sculls came in fifth in their semi-final and failed to qualify; the men in the same event, however, won their semi-final. Lots of rowing (albeit semi-finals I think) and cycling today, so hopefully we can do well.
MK Chris
08-15-2008, 12:37 PM
Well - what an event the Team Sprint was! I went home to watch the final on the big screen over lunch... we broke the world record in the qualifying, were the fastest team again in the heat and the gold medal race, what a race! Suffice to say.. our third gold!
Nice to see the French fella being gracious and congratulating our lads.

MK Chris
08-16-2008, 10:48 AM
I was shattered leading up to that race, but it was so exciting!
How un-British, to win by such a margin... whenever we do win, it's by the slimmest of gaps normally (like the rowers!)
Well, so far Super Saturday has lived up to expectations.. twp bronze in the mens and womens double sculls, gold in the coxless four, guaranteed gold and silver in an all-British final tomorrow between Rebecca Romero and Wendy Houvenhagel (sp?) in the Women's 3000m individual pursuit, Bradley Wiggins is in the gold medal race and Steven Burke is in the bronze medal race for the men's 4000m individual pursuit.
Some lad called Chris Newton has just moved his way up to second position in the points race (which I am struggling to understand, but apparently there are points on offer in 16 sprint races (which are like mini races within a race) and you get more points if you gain a lap. I think.)
Annie

Well Chris I hope you are stocked up for what looks like a very long days viewing and cheering on? :fcb:
MK Chris
08-16-2008, 12:59 PM
It's a shame the weather's nice outside, I won't be going out in it!
What a cracking day for cycling.. all but once when a Briton has been on the track in the velodrome, they have won (or come second in the case of Ross Edgar, who only got beaten by teammate Chris Hoy).
So that's a gold in swimming; a gold and a silver in rowing; two golds, a silver and two bronzes in cycling... with more cycling tomorrow (guaranteed a gold and silver at least and favourites in the rest), more rowing tomorrow, during which we are expected to figure heavily, not to mention Ben Ainslie and the Yngling girls in the sailing!
Phew. I'm sleeping tonight, but up early(ish for a Sunday) - about 8.30 I think.

I just saw the highlights of the Adlington race and I have to say it was amazing. When you think of the calibre of contestants that she just flew past and even smashed the record by 2 seconds. Marvellous, the kind of stuff that dreams are made of.

Well what brave marathon runners we have, we should all be proud of all three them. Outstanding, if a little optimistic for Paula considering the amount of training she's been able to complete. You know what, why shouldn't she be back for 2012? It's the one thing she hasn't won, the one thing she's got left to do.

Absolutely.. add four more golds today, not to mention a host of silver and bronze. It's an astonishing games, the biggest surprise I think was the gymnastics bronze!
As for the cycling, well.. let's hope the athletics take a leaf out of their book! Greg Rutherford (local lad for me) is in the long jump final tomorrow, having jumped third furthest in the heats, we've got three in the high jump final, Andrew Baddeley (which almost sounds like a familiar name) did extremely well to get into the 1500m finals and Christine Ohuorugu is in the 400m hurdles final. Just need to convert at least some of those finals appearances into medals!

Well done to the tema GB, the press will still knock them it always happens. The UK are the only country to knock there own team in everything they achieve or do well in - stupid but so true.
Try and support we may suprise a few, for a small nation that is !
MK Chris

So, a silver this morning for the sailing 470 class and a gold in the cycling team pursuit (blitzing the world record set by the same team only the day before.)
Athletics, Marlon Devonish and Christian Malcolm get through as fastest losers to the 200m (semis I think). Sarah Claxton has done incredibly well to get through to the 100m hurdles final, Tasha Danvers is through in the 200m hurdles and Greg Rutherford's first long jump was a foul.
MK Chris
08-19-2008, 08:18 AM
Interesting to hear Kelly Holmes and Steve Ovett talking about Christine Ohuruogu's chances of gold in the 400m today.. personally I'd say she has very, very little chance and that her best chance is silver (though she has got a very good chance of that.) Sanya Richards is just too strong.
I reckon four athletics medals overall, with one (potential.. maybe even probable) gold in the triple jump.
MK Chris
08-19-2008, 01:18 PM
Well, the cycling went well... except the Madison (emphasis on 'mad'), but Wiggins looked knackered to be fair.
An unexpected silver in the high jump for Germaine Mason.. and now it's a win-win situation for Annie, as Tony Jeffries of Team GB takes on Imre Szello of Team Hungary! It's looking like Jeffries' fight at the minute.

Very well done to Christine Ohuruogu (I think I spelled that right) for her gold in the 400m... can we really do the unthinkable and get two athletics golds?! Come on Phillips Idowu (on Thursday)!
Overall, another four golds, (I forgot to mention Paul Goodison's sailing gold in the 'laser' class, whatever that means) and two silvers. Another great day for them.
On top of that, we've got two guaranteed bronzes in the boxing, having now got to boxers into semi-finals (the losing semi-finalists both get a bronze medal in the boxing, rather than having an extra fight to sort out bronze.) If James Degale also gets through, that could be three boxing medals as well! Amazing.
If Sports Personality of the Year weren't such a farce, it'd be very interesting this year!
MK Chris

I was very impressed with Tasha Danvers today, she ran a very good race. Although she wasn't expected to medal (ever since I have heard people complaining about using the word 'medal' as a verb, I seem to be doing it more often), if she had started her sprint just slightly earlier, she could well have got the silver as well. A cracking run.
And Bolt, well, what can you say? Although he's not Team GB, it deserves a mention. An astonishing run.. trying all the way for this one!
Annie
08-20-2008, 08:04 PM
This Olympics is certainly breaking a few records that's for sure. This young man is only 22 tomorrow and apparently has only been running the 100 meters for 4 months! It doesn't bare thinking about how fast this fella is going to be when he peaks.
MK Chris
08-21-2008, 11:57 AM
He's quite astonishing. He ran that 200m into a headwind.. breaking a record that, at the time it was set, people thought would maybe never be beaten. He can take an extra couple of tenths at least off the 200m record and I'm sure he can go 9.5 in the 100m with a trailing wind and trying all the way.
Anyway, Goldie Sayers is into the final of the javelin and we won another sailing gold this morning :dance3:  Phillips Idowu could well get the gold today and hopefully Shanaze Reade could win the BMX (which is brilliant, by the way, as is the 10k swim, which we have two silvers and a bronze from.)

It's a fine balance!
A catalogue of errors in the 4x100m relay so far, with the Americans and Nigerians dropping the baton and us Craig Pickering for Britain going to early and not being able to pick the baton up in time. Poor fella looks devastated. He took full responsibility in the interview, but Marlon Devonish insisted it's a team event and they all shoulder the blame. In reality it's Pickering's fault, but I feel very sorry for him.

Come on Chaps Russia's hot on our tail! :resent:
MK Chris
08-22-2008, 08:09 AM
Well, we're up to 18 golds now, with Tim Brabants winning his 1000m kayak final. He's in the 500m final as well, but that's not his favourite event apparently, so we'll have to see how he does. Shanaze Reade, the BMX-er went for broke in silver medal position to try and get the gold, but ended up off and probably with a broken hand - BMX is a cracking addition to the schedule though!
James Degale outboxed Darren Sutherland of Ireland to guarantee himself at least a silver medal and he'll be boxing in the gold medal fight of the middleweight class tomorrow. Two more boxing semi-finals for Brits later on are Tony Jeffries of Sunderland (any of you folks know him?), who also fights an Irishman, Kenny Egan in the light-heavyweights and super-heavyweight scouser David Price boxes Roberto Cammarelle, the world amateur champion - so he'll be no walkover.. but the guy he knocked out in the first round was favourite for gold, so who knows?
Degale is now favourite for gold and Price must be the overwhelming favourite for gold if he comes through against Cammarelle. If Tony Jeffries gets through, he'll either fight Kazakh Borat (I mean Yerkebulan Shynaliyev) or the Chinese Xiaoping Zhang. One suspects it'll be the Chinese and if so, how much will the judges impartiality play a part? Just a thought...

It was a pretty amazing games for us.. as I said from the start (well, from when Russia started to catch up with us) third or fourth, who cares; either way, it's far exceeded most people's expectations (with the exception of two people, one of whom is the former Italian Olympic Committee chief Luciano Barra (http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/olympics/team_gb/7534962.stm), the other's name escapes me.)
Star of our team, from my perspective, was Becky Adlington. We knew we're good at cycling (albeit we didn't know we're quite that good) and we knew we're good at rowing and sailing.. we didn't know (or I, at least, didn't know) that we had this brilliant swimming prospect who, at the age of NINETEEN, has managed to become the best British swimmer in 100 years and possibly the best ever British female swimmer. That, to me, is incredible.
