Totally agree. Most people are happy to kick a football around in a park and this is probably why the sport is the best promoted in the country. If Table Tennis was more open to people who just want to keep fit I think we would see a tremendous turnaround. At the moment I feel the focus seems to be more on being part of a team and playing in leagues/tournaments. It's quite snobbish really.
Another point I would like to make is with climate change the way it seems to be, an indoor sport like Table Tennis has surely got to be on the up?
I don't actively play Table Tennis I have to say and haven't done so for a number of years but I'm going to conduct an experiment and see if I can find somewhere locally to play for fitness alone.
Watch this space! :static:
Well What can I say! I have just phoned up a local club where my Father and Brother used to play. Well a guy called Harry who trains the youngsters was very nice. I explained that I haven't played for many, many years but want to get fit and lose some weight and he was very enthusiastic, even said he tutors fitness regimes if I was interested.
Anyway I've got to run out and buy a bat now cos guess what?....................I'm playing next Wednesday! :woho:
I can't tell you how excited I am about this! :static:
OMG! OMG! OMG! :Ahhh:
Well there you have it! Don't be scared because if I can do it anyone can
(beats jogging on the streets I have to say)
As you can see from the above, one glass of Wine to many was had! :resent:
Well I've said it now and my jog buddy has run off anyway so the Marathon training is on hold and it looks like I'm going to ping a pong instead.
The things I get myself into!

Well I did it!
Was terrified before hand not quite knowing what to expect. I popped my head through the door of the hall and asked a fella who was in charge, he said me so I asked him to step outside so I could have a chat with him.
His name was John Jones, a very nice man that made me feel comfortable straight away. He invited me in to meet two other Ladies who play each Wednesday evening. Ruth was accompanying her husband, both are in their senior years and travel up and down the country attending tournaments. They are off to Perth Scotland next weekend. Then there was another Lady around my age called Sue. I asked her if she played in tournaments or just for fitness and she said neither, she just loved to play.
Anyway I thought I was only going to have a look around but they were having none of it and before I knew it I was in my trainers my coat off and enjoying myself thoroughly playing for an hour and a half. John had loaned me his bat and I have to say everyone made me feel very welcome and comfortable.
Am I glad I went? YOU BET!
Will I go again? TRY AND STOP ME!
So the moral of this tale is Table Tennis IS for everyone. Make that phone call, find out the times and go. Like me I'm sure you'll be really glad you did.

Well I've just been on to the Tees Sport website and ordered the Butterfly Boll 500 Table Tennis Bat and Butterfly 3* Table Tennis balls box of 3. All for an affordable £16.34 in total.
Well I will have to join the Sports Club at a cost of £61 per year (but with that it's and entire Sports & Social Club membership) and £2 each week on the door for the Table Tennis. That works out to £3.17 per week for one and a half hours play. Cheaper than hiring a squash court, more sociable and the balls are a lot less painful! :resent:

I think table tennis is a hell of a lot cheaper than a lot of sports; we charge £5 an hour table hire for members and £7 non-members (and open sessions are £5 each for non-members for three hours) - when you consider that that is between at least two people, that's a maximum of £3.50 per hour each - try and play another sport for that sort of money!
Well done Annie, good luck to you. Will you be looking to join a team?

Good choice Annie. You don't need to spend like £39.99 for a starter bat! The main thing is enjoying the sport! :rocker:

Quite possibly, but you generally play darts in the pub... and you try going to a pub for a game of darts and coming out having spent less than a tenner.
Darts? :fart: That's not a sport!

Well he said you can train/play darts almost anywhere as long as you know you won't hit someone on the backside. Basically you just need darts and dartboard and off you go. These are quite cheap. I'm not too sure if this sport uses other equipments, has their own brand of clothing, footwear etc.
We could afford a TT table but the problem is space. :resent:

I agree that you can train for darts anywhere, but it is basically a pub sport in my opinion and you're generally going to be buying drinks while you play it.

It is difficult because when we are older we are more established and more reluctant to take on something that we are not sure of. The fear of embarrassment or failure is prominent. But I honestly can't advocate enough that by giving it a go you are more likely to gain something than loose.
I look in the mirror sometimes and think to myself, before long I will be a heart attack waiting to happen! My life is truly in my hands as is everyone else's.
Table Tennis is a great sport requiring great skill but is also a wonderful way of getting/keeping fit. the Gym I find boring, Jogging is not safe on your own and swimming........well let's just say the bleach gets EVERYWHERE! :resent:

I look in the mirror sometimes and think to myself, before long I will be a heart attack waiting to happen! My life is truly in my hands as is everyone else's.
Consider this, While listening to Paul Harvey (a national syndicated program in the U.S.) he told a story of an overweight middle aged man that had decided to commit suicide because his relationship had ended. The method of suicide was to run as hard as fast and as far as he could to cause a heart attack. He made it a half block before collapsing in a neighbors yard, but not of a heart attack, just exhaustion. After a few days of trying to kill himself by this method his attitude changed and began running for his health. After 18 month he had lose weight, his attitude of life had changed and had become a picture of health. Then while out on a morning run he was hit by a truck that ended his life.
Now in contrast there was a well known runner by the name of Jim Fix that popularizing running and lived to be 52 only to die ironically of too much cholesterol that plugged his arteries.
So one of my life's philosophies is "Don't worry, just be concerned". When it you turn to go, your going.

Well great fun was had and I’ve made a new friend. The lady called Sue has said she also would like to play more than once a week so we’ve exchanged phone numbers. Once I become a full member at the end of the month I’ll be playing at least twice a week. :static:
This week the coach concentrated on my back hand push. Some of what I used to have came flooding back and after 10 mins he said that was too easy for me so we went on to forehand. So I’m now standing there saying to myself ‘Feet’n’Push, Feet’n’Push’. Sounds more like I’m giving myself birthing instructions but I suspect it will come as instinct with practice.

I think table tennis is a hell of a lot cheaper than a lot of sports; we charge £5 an hour table hire for members...:shok: If I had to pay 5 quid an hour, I'd probably be selling my body by now to feed my habit!
How much is membership btw?
MK Chris
10-02-2008, 11:50 PM
In fairness, £5 is for the table - people generally come with a partner for sessions where you hire the table and therefore, the cost is at least halved when you split it. The open sessions (again for non-members) are £5 for the full session (three hours.)
The membership is not really worth it for non-league players unless you use it every week, but you have to be a member to play in the league for the club.

In fairness, £5 is for the table - people generally come with a partner for sessions where you hire the table and therefore, the cost is at least halved when you split it.OK halve it... £2.50 once a week is still £130 for the whole year - which already seems abit steep compared to what I pay at the moment.
But considering that I play more than once a week...the costs would go through the roof at that price.
At the moment I pay £80 a year membership...and that enables me to play in the league and play at the club on Sunday, Tuesday and Wednesday evenings at no extra cost.

The costs in centers are smetimes so high the viability isnt possibility unless massive numbers are there, which many councils arnt bothered about given they need to fill a hall rather than be bothered about its use.
The table tannis centers / clubs are a better idea if possible with a yearly or quarterly subscription meaning you can play when you want plus the hall is always left clean and tidy with tables not damaged by other people who arnt interested in the sport.
£80 aint bad for a year if theres no other costs involved.
MK Chris
10-04-2008, 01:18 AM
Our membership is £50 a year. Our centre is used almost entirely for table tennis and we have to cover the costs... no profit is made, nor should it be.
I pay £175 and for that I could play 24 hours a day 7 days a week (except a couple of hours when kids coaching is on) if I could find a playing partner and my wife would allow (and deliver my meals). All match fees are included.

I think the problem is that people still think they are playing in the 70 s,and want 3 hours play for 80p. till people are prepared to pay for practice and pay a reasonable price, large centres will not prosper.
Most people think nothing of paying £40 to enter a tournament (and most tourneys are fully subscribed) but ask them for £3 to £4 to practice or play a league match and they think you were asking for a loan for a car.
Normally these same people think nothing of paying £5 for tabs or £3.50 for a lager.
If the people who play think the game is worthless or cheap what do people who dont play think?
Lets move the game forward...:urwelcome:
Annie
10-07-2008, 10:38 AM
To a certain extent I agree with you Harry in that it is quite cheap to play for many but if we start making Table Tennis more expensive to play, won't that have a negative effect on encouraging people to take up the sport?
I believe as more people want it prices will increase naturally and hopefully the extra monies will be directed back into the sport and not lining someone's pocket.
HarryBelafonte
10-07-2008, 10:53 PM
my point is ,it is cheap to play, but the people who proffess to love the game are the same people who moan about paying! even a reasonable sum.
It is their main hobby, spending 100s on rubbers etc,but fail to stump up £ 3 practice fee, probably cause they think they are so good...:resent:

Fabulous session this week. Got to play the full 1 1/2 hours which was brilliant.
I'm trying so hard and my determination is undeterred but I'm beginning to think the Coach can't see any improvement. I know there is definite improvement and I truly think I'm an attacker which has completely taken me by surprise. Hopefully he will notice soon.
Made another friend called Jeni and we've exchanged numbers. I'm really aiming to play at least 3 times a week if I can find someone to play with.
Of course there were some professional players around what with the weekends tournament so close. Blew me away watching them. What a fantastic sport so fast and furious, I honestly can't believe how anyone can put football above Table Tennis, It's just in a different class of skill in my opinion.
The speed required and the adaptability to your opponent. I played against a few different players and I'm starting to learn how to adapt to their game of play. Starting to notice how different players return a serve and how they like to rally. Beginning to suss that I need to learn how to return their play but most importantly how to be unpredictable in my play.
God I love this game it's my ultimate challenge. Flippin ek I'm hooked! :resent:

I think it is difficult to dislodge football as the No.1 sport (not sure if this is official). I used to love playing football but both knees are knackered so it's table tennis now. Playing TT doesn't really hurt my knees that much.

Well although some of the more professional players might not be inclined to play with mere mortals such as myself I am not deterred! Surely part of promoting the sport is by encouraging it in becoming something that everyone can enjoy? Perhaps that's where the Chinese have got it right, Table Tennis is part of the community and not just for the select few?

I need something with more meat in it! How do I return a top spin serve for example?
Play the ball with the bat angled down and either topspin it back or block it back (you don't want to be a chopper do you?) depending on how high, how much time, how long, how much you are out of position etc. It is very difficult to give specific instructions for particular balls as there are so many possibilities.

It isn't that bad being a chopper is it?
No one actually wants to be a chopper. You only end up with that style when you are to old and slow to play properly. :bag:

I like choppers especially modern day choppers who mix chops and topspins not only on forehand but backhand as well like me. Haha! :dance3:

@ Ruudolph - I don't mean it really, I was just trying to be controversial to promote debate. As there only seems to be 3 of us here it hasn't really worked.

Debate? Yeah bring it on but not on here. This is Annie's thread about her love for table tennis. She won't be happy to find out it is being used for choppers vs attackers debate! :Mood: (that's Annie) :snigger:
Maybe if we post a couple of quick tips for her she won't notice the stuff inbetween.
- When playing a backhand topspin, try to imagine throwing a frisbee at a 45 degree angle (maybe more depending on the rubber).
- Work on the recovery after the stroke so you are ready for the next ball.
There that should do it.

Why don't you put 'seeking table tennis partners' advert on Gumtree? I did that about 2 months ago and I was surprised about 6 people responded so far. 4 recreational and 2 lower league players. I've played with all the 4 recreational players but didn't get the chance to play with the league players as they didn't respond back after I told them I just play TT for fun. Well it's not like I'm dying to play with them!
Anyway thanks to those who responded and didn't mind playing with me, I'm having TT sessions at least once a week now (I do have about 15 mins of TT on weekdays at work during break time though) but I would like to have 2 sessions or more a week! The more the better! :wink2:

This is Annie's thread about her love for table tennis.
Was just blow drying my hair and felt I wanted to come back to this well intentioned comment.
If I'm honest this thread is nothing about me, it's intended purpose is to highlight that anyone no matter their age or level of fitness/ability can begin to participate in a sport that can only benefit their health and fitness.
The experiences I'm sharing will hopefully encourage someone else who has perhaps been thinking about having a go. Ruudolph has just given a great idea of placing an ad and I have.
I was initially invited to the site because there was a lot of setting up to do, ticking boxes etc. and because I'm online a lot. But as I've gotten into the spirit of things I've realised how much I used to enjoy Table Tennis when I was young and that sitting here on my well cushioned bottom and not taking part myself made me a bit of a hypocrite! Well do as I do and not just as I say.
Maybe I'll never be ranked No.21 in the country like Mr Robson but I'll give it a good go and hopefully encourage a few others along the way :rocker:

Hi Tony,
I'm Anna-Maria and shocked that I got a reply although glad. Where abouts are you from? I'm in wolverhampton so hoping to find a local opponent. I've joined the Woodfield Sports and Social but apart from the weekly coaching session I'm struggling to find anyone to play with.

Well I've had a restless night about this and have sent the guy a list of local groups to Birmingham and explained that I was really looking for a female opponent. The lesson here to anyone placing a personal ad is be specific in your requirements.
I have now revised my ad and it reads like this.........
I've just returned to the sport after many years in order to regain my fitness. Looking for someone similar to play with. I don't mind playing against someone who is much better than me and I promise to get the ball back to you a few times at least.
Female opponents only.
Just want to play TT, do you?

What's wrong with Tony, Annie? I think it is possible to make arrangements by emails. There's this guy who just wants to contact me by email even after we've played like twice now!
If you just want to look for female TT partners then you have less options as there are more male than female players. Beggars can't be choosers Annie! Haha! :wink2:
Can I respond to your advert then?

He's mailed me back and was very understanding and OK about it.
I've had another e-mail but again it's a fella. I hear what you are saying Ruudolph but I think I'll hold out until a Lady comes along.
Potentially placing an ad is a good idea as I've had 2 quick replies so I would recommend this to anyone looking for an opponent. Just my criteria is a bit restrictive so I'll just have to wait a bit longer.

My forehand is coming along and my back hand is a natural reflex now. Coach had me practising my forehand spin serve thingy (if that's what it's called).
Well I asked Coach about upgrading my bat and what my style of play was, he said it was too early to tell and that a better bat was a good idea but to go for an all rounder at this stage. He even arranged for someone in the know to get one for me. I tell you, these Table Tennis people are so friendly
Anyway Coach is away for 4 whole weeks to Australia but Helen will be there in case we forget how to hold our bats! :wacko2:
Mixed feelings about this week, every time I play I am getting better but it's just not fast enough for me. Given the right ball my shots are pretty good but I'm struggling returning spinners. It's really starting to get me down! :cry3:
I'd play 7 days a week given the opportunity. Wish I had a returney board to play with :sulk:

The thing is Annie (and I have had to be told this several times by several different people; it took me a while to come to terms with!) you can't massively improve overnight, it's a gradual process - which, I agree, can be frustrating - but it'll come.
Also, as regards playing seven days a week, I'm not certain that'd be a brilliant idea - I know you're enjoying it at the moment, which is brilliant, but it is possible to overdo it, then you'll get fed up with it. I try to play three times a week if I can, sometimes four; and every year or so it's good to have maybe a month off - keeps you keen - if, by the end of that month, you're itching to pick up a bat, that can only be a good thing.
Annie

actually i was being serious, the amount of times i have played in a tournament when Helen Lower was No1 seed seen her Knocking then she would check draw and realise someone she may loose to was playing then next thing she would have a bad belly or even just scratch for no reason and go home is unreal, not saying she is a bad player at all and did very well to get to england no1.
your point about us northerners taking the mick out of eachother is all part of the fun and quality banter is what its all about.

Mr Wilko, you are entitled to your opinion as is everyone as long as it is not aggressively put (which your's isn't). I was just hoping to invite Helen to join the site but feel a bit embarrassed to do so now.
On the occasions I have met her she comes across as a quiet down to earth Lady and if she has used a well know tactic of this sport then she wouldn't be the first I'm sure.
Maybe I will pluck up the courage to invite her so she can have the opportunity to reply. She may even have a thing or two to say about your Trumpet Mr Wilko!!

Well it's half term and the Ladies were thin on the ground, however I did get a knock around with one of the lads who must of felt sorry for me sitting there on a chair swinging me legs like Kermit the Frog! Eventually Ruth turned up and we had a good session. Although everyone is lovely I have to say the dicipline of John our coach was sorely missed (by me at least).
I thought you all might like to check out our hall? We can squeeze in upto 8 tables at anyone time.

The Lady on the Right is his wife Ruth but I'm not sure what their surname is. I do know however that he's a very good player and have seen him sparring with a young professional.
Surname is Meredith, he eats 'young professionals' for breakfast ... although no longer in the 'first flush of youth', he's still a very canny player.

Well just to let you all know my new bat arrived.
Blade: - Stiga Legend Allround Classic
Red Rubber: - Stiga Mendo 5 Star
Black Rubber: - Stiga Mendo 5 Star Energy
I have to say it feels slower than my 1st bat but the control is significantly better.
So what's the verdict? Also now that I've spent my life savings on a good bat what care do I need to take of it?
Ruudolph
11-11-2008, 10:10 AM
I was in dreamland when you posted this Annie. :thtease:
Sounds like your new blade is quite expensive! :shok:
For me after every TT session I usually clean my bat (rubber) with water using some sponge. Once it dries I slap on the rubber protective film (I just use transparencies cut to the shape of the rubbers) and keep it in the bat cover. That's about all. I'm not too sure about other people's ritual though.

Well Coach is still on his jollies but tonight was a really good session. I got to play with a few different players including some fellas that put me through my paces.
Well the shoulder rubbing continues as at the end of the session a Lady approached me conducting a survey. Well we got chatting and I did my bit about promoting TT Talk and what we're about i.e. promoting Table Tennis and the Lady turns out to be none other than Damien Nicholls' Mother. Seems she's the secretary of my club and has another son who also plays called Russell.
Makes me wonder who I'm going to bump into next week at the Woodfield........Prince Charles? :static:
And there's Ashley of course. Don't know if he still plays though.

What a workout! :heat:
Well only two girls turned up tonight and the fellas tend to pair up where ever they can so us girls rotated as we often do. Then Helen turned up and after a while I got to play with her for a good 3/4 of an hour. Every trainee should get the chance to play with a professional as they can keep the rally going and they place the ball in the right place for you to be able to practise your technique.
As I've already mentioned in another thread, tonight I learnt how to obtain strength and speed in my forehand spin through technique rather than muscle. This will come in handy as I improve and some of the fellas accept me as a real contender. Just need to get the practise in so I don't forget it all :resent:
All I know is if I could train just 1 hour everyday with a player of Helen's calibre then I'd be a perfect 10 in 6 months easily [coughs into her cup of tea]!
Annie
