Does anyone know a color blind person that plays table tennis? :scratchhead:

I am a little colourblind with red/green/browns, but don't ever notice it other than when doing those colourblindness tests. I don't think it affects my game at all.

Oddly someone (who is doing a school project and making his own bat) asked the other day why the two colours of rubber have to be red and black - why can't it be green and blue or something... I didn't know, but I told him I thought it was probably because everyone can tell the difference between red and black, whereas people with certain types of colour blindness could have trouble otherwise. Makes sense to me anyway.

From what I have read and examples that are given for the types or degress of color blindness the color blue will be a definite difference in color and not just a different shade. Is this so for you?

Sorry to digress but I've asked the Coach a couple of times what's the difference between the Black side and Red side. He just keeps telling me not to worry about it. Is it something to do with colour blindness? Sounds like a daft question but if you don't know! :resent:

Not really sure what you are getting at Guy, I know blue as the colour I have always seen as blue and was told was blue when I was young. Don't know if anyone else sees something different.

The reason for this question is to try to understand if color blind tt players have problems focusing on the orange ball in this given environment or not (sort of like the "spot the ball" thread).
In your opinion would there be a better color then orange to be used?

There was a study at a German University about 40 years that said that the best colours for table tennis visibility were a yellow ball and a black table. We got yellow balls but not black tables, so no one got to prove or disprove their study. For some reason the yellow balls became orange balls!:rocker:

An optician once told me that true colour blindness really meant you saw the world in an equivalent of black and white ... thus you saw shades and do not recognise colours.
I therefore imagine if you are truly colour blind there will be a difference in the black and red rubbers.
Most people who struggle with certain colours (greens are browns seem common) are therefore colour defective. I imagine that there are very few who struggle to tell the difference between black and red.
And Annie...
I was always told that the red rubber was faster than the black (assuming the two rubbers are the same). Not sure with modern manufacturing if this remains true.

Thanks Belisar. It might sound like a daft question but I genuinely don't know. :resent:
As it happens I like red

I don't particularly like the orange ball, but I don't think I find it any more difficult to see.

Thanx Belisar this is what I was trying to get at when I ask about shades instead of colors.

i wonder if a different colour would make the rubbers quicker as the black rubber has a stronger pigment then red this making them quicker!!!!! :tomato::tomato:

Black is usually slower and spinnier I think.

Color blindness (color vision deficiency) is a condition in which certain colors cannot be distinguished, and is most commonly due to an inherited condition. Red/Green color blindness is by far the most common form, about 99%, and causes problems in distinguishing reds and greens. Another color deficiency Blue/Yellow also exists, but is rare and there is no commonly available test for it.
Depending on just which figures you believe, color blindness seems to occur in about 8% - 12% of males of European origin and about one-half of 1% of females. I did not find any figures for frequency in other races. Total color blindness (seeing in only shades of gray) is extremely rare.
There is no treatment for color blindness, nor is it usually the cause of any significant disability. However, it can be very frustrating for individuals affected by it. Those who are not color blind seem to have the misconception that color blindness means that a color blind person sees only in black and white or shades of gray. While this sort of condition is possible, it is extremely rare. Being color blind does keep one from performing certain jobs and makes others difficult.
So unless you can't tell the difference between a green table and the red rubber on a bat, you might well be in trouble! :resent:

I had a jumper which I thought was brown and the only time I could tell it was green was in sunlight (I had had it over a year before I went out in the sun in it). It used to cause lots of confusion when i asked my wife where my brown jumper was.

I have a pair of these too which I save for special occasions. They are getting a little old now though. I wore them for the Newcastle GP a couple of years ago and got some very strange looks from the locals when I went out shopping at lunchtime.

If not for the black and gray I would call them pumpkins not shoes:rol:
not only are you colorblind you dress funny. Sorry JKC I'm only fun-nun with you, I couldn't help myself :rol:
If it make you feel better, the last time I got a haircut (the end of June) I told the barber to cut it short. For two months I walked around with my hair looking like I put a finger in an electrical wall socket. Hair jell wouldn't keep it down.
