Table Tennis Forum - The Hard Bat Area

Due to the success of the Hard Bat events being held, it has become apparent that there is considerable interest in playing Table Tennis with the traditional Hard Bat – a plain wooden blade, covered by short pimpled rubber without any sponge. So this is the area for exactly that!

If H.E.A.T. is interested, then maybe in co-ordination with them, Barrow TTC could put a tournament on in Barrow? For adequate spacing, we could probably only have 5 or 6 tables up. So it would have to be either a cut down event or over two days? It might be that Barrow is just too far for everyone (then again, a tournament could be twinned with a group outing to the Lakes?).

Any thoughts?

Ideas on Hardbat Blade for Blocking

Well, this seems to be the only forum with an active hardbat area and people who are passionate about the topic, so I may as well ask this here, since it's just been me experimenting thus far.

I've been playing hardbat regularly in my club against normal sandwich rubber players; I came from a blocking background when I used sandwich rubber myself and have been trying to replicate that as much as possible.

One thing that's a definite is that if your primary strategy is to block with hardbat, your paddle needs to be as slow as possible; DEF+ may be too fast. It's not like inverted where your paddle can be a lightning bolt since topspin will prevent your ball from flying off the table; hardbat returns dead balls almost every time, so I've found that for myself, being someone who blocks 75% of the time, a DEF blade is required.

The only other issue would be, how much flex should the blade have? Flex helps me out in my offensive shots and in times I really need to lift the ball, and I'm starting to think it may actually be good for blocking. With inverted, they always say the stiffer the better as far as blocking is concerned, but I've tried a very stiff blade and blocks seemed to be more inconsistent. You would think flex would make some blocks pop up too high; does anyone have anything to say on that?
